wheel bearings on a 1996 Toyota Tacoma

    1996 toyota tacoma
    I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with manual locking hubs and i replaced the front wheel bearings and I used a 20 ton press and my question is I still have play from up and down and is there supposed to have any play or are they supposed to be tight any help will be appreciated.

    they should be tight, did you torque the nut on the back of the bearing flange ? then stake it so it can't move ? There is a spacer that goes between the hub nut and bearing, did that get installed ? ( 43515 if ABS 43501/2j if no ABS )

    Did you properly support the bearing when pressing the hub into the bearing? When I did this job with my buddy Jordan, we screwed up and didn't properly support the bearing but we lucked out and the bearing was smooth and tight. There shouldn't be any detectable play like you're experiencing. Something is definitely not right.

    Check out this video we did doing a manual hub swap on a 3rd Gen 4runner. In the video, I explain how we screwed up and show the proper way to support the bearing while pressing the hub in. If you made the same mistake that we did, maybe you didn't have the same luck and the bearing suffered damage during the press work. If this is the case, the only thing you can do is start over and press in new bearings.
