Wheel center difference

    I decided to paint the chrome badge red using plastic dip. Because I think chrome sucks. Took the front centers off and was like cool maybe I can just leave it like this it looks great without them. Then took the rears off and...I guess not. Apologies if this is a stupid and obvious question but why are they different?

    One of those is housing the pawls that engage front wheel drive. The other one is a drum.

    The front and rear axles are built differently.

    The rear wheel always points the same direction so there is a solid shaft attached to a flange for the wheel to bolt on to similar to this:

    The front wheel needs to be able to turn to steer so it has a flexible axle using a constant velocity joint similar to this:

    Notice the big nut on the right? That is what is under the nice looking cap on your front wheel.
