    Hello TW,

I am new to Tacomas and off road in general. I have a secondary set of new tires that came with the truck. They are BFG ko2's and measure 265/75 R16. I wanted rims for them so I bought a set of Black Rhino Arsenal wheels, but the new rims are too wide for the tires. So, I either have to buy new tires or buy different wheels. (All the aftermarket wheels seem to be 8" wide as well.) The tires would need to be 285's according to the local tire shop. To try this out, I used my friends wheels and tires off of his FJ to see if the tires would rub, and they rub in a big way when turning. They rub on the pinch weld and plastic on the inner fender, rearward of the tire. I feel they are possibly too wide to run without a lift or something. A lift is something I have not done yet and have no experience, or really desire, to do.

I am sure I am doing things wrong but, does anyone out there run these wheels (or other 8" wide rims) and what did you do to make them fit? I am not looking to do anything more than need be as the truck is in such good condition and I ideally don't want to hammer, lift, and/or weld. I also feel wheel spacers could potentially be dangerous and would like to avoid their use.

Thank you in advance for answering my question and welcoming me into the Tacoma World.

You're not gonna fit the 285s without lifting or modifying the wheel well area [hammering away at it]. I'd suggest you try to find narrower wheels and then you can fit those K02's you already own without any of that modifying

I suggest you start reading here: https://adventuretaco.com/guide/what-size-tires-fit-my-lifted-tacoma/ to get a better understanding of all the variables in play.

A 265/75/16 fits on an 8" wheel. I currently have 265/75/16 Goodyear Workhorse ATs on Procomp 7069 16x8 wheels. More so than the wheel's width, you need to pay attention to the offset and backspacing. Straying too far from stock will cause all kinds of headaches.

You need to do some mods to run the 285s- A suspension lift isn't going to do it (read the link above). You'll have to hit the pinch weld. I put a small body lift on my truck to clear the 285s.

Not sure who told you that a 265/75/16 will not fit on an 8" wide wheel... it will fit perfectly. Time to find a new tire shop.

If it's staying at stock height, I recommend running 265/75/16 as your max tire size and run a 16x8 4.5" bs/+0mm offset wheel spec.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. The shop I took it to took two hours to get one tire on and damaged two wheels in the process. (They are replacing the wheels for me.)

The tire shop successfully mounted one tire but it had almost no bulge for the side wall as the tire was stretched wide. My concern was that the tire, being stretched wide, may come off while off roading. Is this something any of you have experienced?

Thank you for the link as well, very informative.

In the meantime, I will look for narrower rims.

    Thank you all.

Something is wrong with that shop if they're struggling to put that combo on. It should fit and work just fine. Did you verify all the numbers? Tire size and rim size. Are you sure it's not a 16x10" rim sent by mistake?

I measured the wheels and checked everything out. They are definitely 8 inches not ten. I also went to BFGoodrich.com and confirmed the tire can fit on the rim. They will fit an 8" rim according to the website. I am going to take everything to a different shop this weekend to get them put on.

Apologies for the lateness of this update. I was finally able to get the wheels on the car. It really changes the look and I like it much more than stock. I hammered down the pinch weld on the inner fender well and used the heat gun to re-form the fender liner so neither rub. Under full jounce, and a full lock steering, it touches a bit but nothing major.

I also replaced a lot of suspension components: Tie rod ends, sway bar bushings, end links, upper and lower ball joints.

Thank you all for your advice.

Do you have the specs on these specific wheels? Just surprised to see you had so much trouble with a size that should have been straight forward.

I ran that size tire on the stock wheels with zero lift, then with lift and on a 16x8 wheel. Never any need to bash or cut, no rub and no issues with the tire mounting.

These are the specs off of the website.

I was running these exact same tires on the stock wheels with no issues.

I ordered them through summit racing. I was told by summit racing, and by multiple tire shops that I did not need hub centric rings. I have been experiencing tire shaking and wheel weights being lost. I finally took it to toyota and said please figure this out. They explained I needed the rings. I called summit and explained this and they still insisted I didn't need them. I even had to go to their site and give them the part number as the guy wasn't showing the parts and I bought the last set. The rings should arrive tomorrow and I hope it fixes the shaking and wheel weight loss as I have had to have them balanced three times in about three months.
