Be sure to take it down to the plastic and clean with mineral spirits. The Krylon paints are designed to fuse and become part of a the plastic surface. ALL-IN-ONE works with a combination of plastic and metal.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Any advise on removing the old?

Today I am removing the fender flares to paint with the SEM Bumper Coater flexible black #39103. After removing the screws one has to pull them away from the sides of the truck. The clips are breaking. Where might one source replacement clips?

    SEM paint: https://www.semproducts.com/product/bumper-coatertm/39103#product-details

Update: I found this info with a little search. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fender-flare-clips.536280/

Please wish me luck with this project.

Update 2: The above link pertained to the later model of the Tacoma. I found these that will fit my 2003 model and placed my order. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JHQJ831/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is scrubbing them with scotch brite pads with Dawn dishwashing detergent sufficient in removing oils?

Highly recommend SEM paints for repainting any of the plastic trim...they work very well, and seem to hold up very well too.

As for clips and fasteners, I've had good luck here:

Okay, I have the fender flares and the under-the-bumper piece cleaned and painted. The one can of SEM was just enough to finish up the five pieces. I'll reattach the front piece today but the flares will have to wait until Sunday afternoon when the new clips deliver.

In the meantime, what's the best way to remove the fender flare clips? They'd be easier to access from the backside if I removed the plastic fender well pieces, but those fasteners seem challenging to remove. Is there a trick to removing them?

Edit: The red clips took grabbing and turning 90 degrees where the slot is wider and they came out easily. Half of the blue clips did the same but the other half were in a square hole and required some prying with a small pry bar. They would come off more easily by pinching the fingers from the back side but that would first require removal of the plastic inner fender.

Here's some before and after pictures of the work thus far. The truck will be sans fender flares until delivery Sunday or Monday. They are painted and look good. I hope this paint lasts for a while.

For anyone interested here is a side photo with the freshly painted fender flares installed. It turned out nice I think. Now let's see how long they stay this color.

Thx for the post, the result looks clean. I am thinking to try Bumper Coater too. Does it seem like a tough enough coating you would use it again given the experience? And you got away with one can- was that with one coat or 2? thanks!

There are three coats on the front under-bumper piece and the four fender flares. The instructions say to apply several light coats. This stuff goes on more like a stain than a coating. It dries fast but says it takes 48 hours to harden. We'll see how long it lasts; I hope it lasts for a long time.

I'll report later if it scratches and/or if it fades.

Here's a picture from this morning that shows the results in bright sunlight and in the shade.

The wheels are from an FJ Cruiser, not sure of the year model. They are 17” diameter. They and the tires are 1” larger diameter than stock.

I like these wheels much better than the factory stock directional wheels.

Here we are three months later and the black fender flares and under bumper piece remain black as the photos above. I'm pleased with the product and the results. Now I need new tires and will start a new thread for that.

I got a can of the SEM Bumper Coater you used and tried it on a piece of PVC pipe. What surprised me is how well it sticks to the dirty pipe that I only wiped with a rag. It seems to almost soak into the plastic and dye it, as it doesn't really have any thickness to it and where I cut some off with a sharp knife the hardness of the black coating seems similar to the plastic. Even where I cut some off I can't make it look any different by picking with a fingernail. The coating seems just as good and solid as the plastic itself.

I expected to get be some sort of rubbery coating but it is the oppposite, which does seem perfect for flares and just about anything else made of plastic.

This is the Honda Black color, which seems like a perfect color match to the faded stock mud flaps and slightly darker than the faded stock fender flares.

The painted wheel flares are holding up pretty good. I polished my headlights a few weeks ago and some of the compound slung onto the front wheel flares. The spots remain but were mostly removed with some washing and some 303 Protectant applied.

I put the 303 Protectant on the new tires too. It looks pretty good for a 17.5 year old truck.
