The thing about ABS/VSC/Traction control is you don't need it......until you do.

I'll be the first one to shit on them when offroad.....but on road? Statistics have shown they have helped limit accidents and fatalities. Unless someone has a dedicated pre-runner or crawler rig (basically 99.9% of the people on tacomaworld) I would advise them to get axles that maintain the OEM bearing style to keep the nanny stuff.

All the defensive driving and skillful driving in the world can't account for the stupidity of other drivers, that's where the safety crap comes into play.

The only reason to keep the ABS is in a panic stop situation. I don't use ABS off roading at all. I flip it off (ABS Kill Switch) but it is nice to know I have it incase I need to panic stop on the road. That is all.

Outside of that, geometry, shock tuning, spring rates, ect is what really does make it a 4 link/3link work correctly without binding and handle correctly for the vehicle / driving style. what i should have said is, for street "Saftey" I would like to keep the ABS.

As for the 14bolt - The gearing does not have low options past 4.90-ish. I think it stops has 4.91. No High pinion option. Which, if I am going to this extreme to build a rig and knowing how i drive, I want that drive shaft up as high as I can. But from what I understand the High pinion does come along with longevity issues to to added stress on the pinion on the coast side. This is the major reason I would like the HP60 over the ford 9". this also comes into play for short wheel base (like the 4runner) in maintaining correct drive shaft angles. shaving the 14 bolt also sucks but thats due to the massive 10.5 ring gear. I know there are kits to do it. I just don't know enough about it to say how i feel about it. Maybe you know more about this than I do and could give some insight on shaving. My first gut reaction is weakening the bottom part of the housing and may crack if you drop the diff on a rock or how it will hold up against abuse on the trail. the 14 bolt does have massive 1 9/16's axle shafts that plays in their favor over the 60's 1 5/16. It also has a locking ring rather than shims in the 60. the locking ring can be adjusted for wear vs. the 60 that you have to pull apart and rebuild once the shims wear out and you get play. that's just my 02. on my understanding of the two.

If you buy a jeep there is enough aftermarket support you don't have to understand any of this and just go drop $20k and be done with bolt on long arm kit that companies have done their own R&D on geometry, spring rate, ride height, shock tuning, ect. haha but what fun is that.

My Rockjock axle shafts are larger than a stock Dana 70. I compared them one in my buddies shop while I was pressing on bearings.

People have moved away from high 9s because they can't handle what offroaders today are throwing at them. AFAIK there's one company that still makes them but who knows how long they'll be around.

Throwing it out there in case anyone is interested in doing something last minute.

Gonna be running Pilot Rock to Willow Creek Jeep trail tomorrow, then up into Lake Arrowhead if anyone wants to come along. @AssBurns I forgot to join that FB group but I'll check it out tonight and see if maybe our paths will cross. You going to be on a HAM radio?

Rockjocks and prorocks are high pinions, supposedly the aftermarket housings address the short comings when trying to take a stock front axle and adapt it to the rear for a off-road rig. Stock HP axles don't have correct oiling passages and don't have adequate bearings to minimize pinion deflection, Currie/Dynatrac resolved those issues with their custom housings

(I did a bit of researching before i dropped 4k on an axle)

Thanks for the invite, think we're gonna stick to the Pilot Rock - Lake Arrowhead route though...hope the kiddos feel better! Shit's been going around lately, half my department at work has been out this week with the flu or strep
