Its times like this I'm glad I have my DD. But once gas prices go down again, I'm like, "why don't I just DD my Tacoma..."

yeah lucky for me I live ~5 miles from work, don't even need to get on the freeway. If my commute was further I would definitely have to do the DD mod and get another commuter vehicle. But with my short work commute it just doesn't make sense for me financially to do that, all I really need to do with these high gas prices is cut back on the wheeling trips a bit. I go through sometimes 2 whole tanks in a weekend when going out on a trip.

Hush you. I am about to be able to start wheeling again. Can't have you stop before I even get back in the game

Oh I'm not stopping lol, just can't do 3 or 4 trails a month like I was. Probably do one good trip a month until gas goes back down, plus it's summer now anyway and I can't stand wheeling in the heat. So the timing isn't all that bad, if this had happened last Fall I'd be really pissed

Yea, getting a DD is actually not saving money over gas prices. The extra cost of insurance, registration, maintenance, and gas for the second car doesn't actually save you any money, unless your commute is like really far. and that's assuming its paid off already.

The only reason I have the DD, is because I've paid it off, and it saves the miles on my Tacoma. It's overall not a cost-saving measure.

    Agree 100%

Getting a DD for me would serve a few points.
    1) backup car if the truck breaks
    2) backup car if my wifes car breaks
    3) loaner car if friend/family members car breaks
    4) keep mileage low on the truck
    5) would rather it just be a spare fun car to drive :D

Basically 3rd car is to have a backup.

yeah more than anything I'll be getting another vehicle just to have something reliable that my wife and I (and eventually a kid) can use around town comfortably. Definitely can't be my truck lol, and her 03 Accord has been having all sorts of problems lately.

Used Mazda 5 is a decent mini van for when you got kids. The sliding doors are really useful and its not FUCKING huge like most current "mini" vans.
Eventually we are gonna sell the Mazda 5 we have when the little one is older and we don't really need the sliding door feature anymore.

Wife says she wants a RAV 4 next.
    I want a BRZ.

We were looking at leasing an EV a year or so ago but didn't pull the trigger because we only had two parking spots at the condo. I wouldn't mind an EV but I think in the next 5 years there will be a lot more options in that game. Right the only two options I really see are the Chevy Bolt and Tesla. The Nissan Leaf had really short range but I think they just upped the range on it in the past 6 mo or so.

oooh a BRZ would be fun, those don't come with AWD though right? I'd love to have an Impreza STI wagon with AWD and a turbo, but one vehicle with boost is probably all I should do responsibly lol.

The Chevy Volts are nice, my dad had one for a few years and really liked it as I remember.

    BRZ is RWD only.

Chevy killed off the Volt (which was a plugin hybird) and now only have the Bolt (full EV)
No idea why they used those two names for the car. It always causes confusion when your talking about them :D

Turbo, AWD, 4 door would be fun also.

You just listed the reasons I have my DD... except for #5, because my DD is a Mazda 3 econobox. It's a little fun to drive, but nothing like a "hot" hatch.

Yeah if the 3rd car wasn't fun to drive I don't think I would drive it much which defeats trying to keep the mileage down on the Taco.

Taco has a S/C so its fun to drive.

I've been throwing out the idea for a DD but it's had to justify having another vehicle to maintain. Between registration, insurance, etc that's a hard one to justify. I know it'll save wear and tear on the truck and better gas mileage but everything else seems pricey.

Yep. like I said, its only worth it if you want to save miles on your truck, or some other practical (like you need a van for the kids, type) purpose. It doesn't save money overall to have 2nd car.

How'd you break your AC on a relatively newer Tacoma?

Mine "works"...I use the word loosely. I need to get it looked at, it sounds like how Darth Vader breathes and doesn't do a great job if it's really hot outside.
