Drilling straight into the metal according to the mounting instructions. Though the write-ups I've read suggest laying down a rubber seal and using sealant that I'll be picking up from the hardware store before I do the install.

I bet that rack will hold A LOT of weight once installed. I installed my rack onto the OEM rack which is only supposed to hold about 100lbs. I currently have a Plano case that holds a shovel, axe, tow strap and misc tools. I have traction boards up there, lights and an ARB awning. I'm probably over the weight limit but its seems to be holding up just fine. I want to add a high-lift but I dont believe I can. I'll have to save for a year and get a Prinsu

According to the note that was included by Smittybilt with the rack, they don't recommend going over 150lbs. As long as it'll hold my hi-lift, a shovel, maybe a jerry can and a few miscellaneous tools then I'll be set

Should work good for what you have in mind! Too much weight up there will be too top heavy anyways:notsure:

True...I might need to counter the weight with a few hundred lbs worth of sandbags in the bed, lol

I can't notice the weight on my roof. Only thing I notice is the LOUD howling that it makes.

It only bothered me for the first month or so. Now I'm used to it. I does get annoying on the freeway if you're driving for hours. Like the trip to pismo will suck lol

I had a nasty vibe around 60. Balancing the tires and an alignment fixed it

I'm getting a Softtopper in the future, plus I want to mount my lights on the roof and have a little extra storage up there.

I'm sort of on an expo-build I guess, lol.

I'm also looking into soft tops, like the fact that I can sleep in there an also be able to take my dirtbike around when it's down without having to deal with storing a hard top

Yup, plus I think the utilitarian look of them suits the first gen Tacoma look really well. I also like the idea of being able to remove/install it with ease, kind of reminds me of the removable tops on the first gen 4runners back in the day (kind of a stretch, but still).

Sliders welded on are removable with some grinding. Holes in roof are permanent. Make sure you seal it with a generous amount of silicone.
They advertise way less than it can actually hold just to be safe.

Get a Prinsu, I really liked mine on my Tacoma. Held my tent just fine.

You should be okay. I never felt too top heavy with my tent up there
Mine was bad on the tacoma. When I put the lightbar in this rack, it got bad too. I fixed it since then though.

You guys with softoppers should talk to billy from @Bruteforce Fab about making a skeleton for the softopper. I had an idea to make an internal skeleton that came through the top of the canvas in order to be able to mount a roof rack on it and hold a lot of weight. I ended up getting a shell for cheap but I really wish I went that route. Billy and I talked about it a bit and he was interested. I'd still love to see somebody do it!
