So it's cloudy today and expected to be clear (mid-50s) Tuesday/Wednesday in Big Bear but there's probably snow from the recent rains. Does anyone know if the chain restrictions are still in effect? I'm looking to camp Tuesday into Wednesday and do some trails with the girlfriend; anyone can tag along if they want. I only have my 37" BFG KM2s and no chains.

all routes into big bear are in a R2 chain restriction still...all vehicles accept 4wd with snow tires must have on chains on there drive wheels.

The roads are still pretty crappy but caltrans and local puplic works are getting it better. Be prepared to sit in a TON of traffic as it is EXTREMELY crowded in all routes coming up to big bear with all the holiday tourists. Have heard reports of it taking 3 hours from the base of the mountain to the dam in big bear today. We received 12-18" or more in some areas.

Damn.. I need to find some like today, haha -- or borrow off someone. My KM2s are MTs and most likely won't pass as snow tires since they aren't siped but I am 4WD; unless you know of guys getting passed the checkpoints with MTs? Also, if we leave really early and get to the base of the mountain at like 6 or 7a, do you think we'll still hit THAT much traffic?

Ya you will be fine with your set-up. They don't hassle you as long as you are 4x4, should always at least carry chains with you though during snow conditions. If there is a checkpoint they will ask if you at least have them in your vehicle which is required by law with all vehicles.
Earlier the better forsure. I typically avoid trying to head into town whenever possible during the christmas/new year Holiday period because of how busy it is up here, especially with so many inexperienced tourist drivers in the snow, it can get sketchy. Typically 330 to the 18 is the worst route for holiday traffic, so I would either take highway 38 or the 18 through the high desert into Lucerne valley.

That's the trail a few of us did (TW) a few weeks ago. Its 38 to glass road then onto 2n06/Radford Rd to 2n10/skyline. Unfortunately the forestry gates are all now closed due to this big storm. Some of the trails up here do not have gates though so they stay open all winter.

Damn... Not that I'm planning to go up a snow covered trail in all of my 2wd glory, but thought that would be an awesome short cut from the traffic for you 4x4 guys.

Yep, the forestry trys to minimize the impact on the land or stuck vehicles from people causing ruts and such from the snow and water crossings. That's one of there main reasons for closing the gates from what I was told.

Awesome! Thanks, man. Yea, it would suck to drive all the way from SD just to be turned around by the checkpoint. They'll ask if I have them and I could lie but do they ask to physically see them?
