Hey TW what's the good word . So I'm sitting here thinking about doing some wheeling and I'm curious to know what y'all prefer for OFF-ROAD an automatic or my personal choice the manual trans??

I prefer manual. More control and lower first gear for engine braking.

Depends on what 'offroading' you're doing. I like it for everything other than rock crawling where you either need twin sticks (or maybe just a 4.7 low range instead) or you get used to the smell of burning clutch. The addition of a hand throttle would make it easier. The major plus to the manual is controlled hill descents where an auto you either have to hold the brake or use the fancy DAC button.

Been 'wheeling manuals since forever and haven't burned up any clutches in decades. I did ride the clutch way too much on my '78 FJ40 when I was learning to drive properly, worried about killing it and killed a clutch in it.

Just keep that left foot solidly planted on the dead pedal. The engine won't stall, really, it won't.

Having super low t-case gears is very handy on highly technical trails, that is very true. I ran a 4.7 case when I got through Rubicon, Hell's Revenge, Kokopelli, etc. I really beat my truck up during those years. Haven't had much issue with the Tacoma running stock on the intermediate stuff. I don't have any interest in beating this truck up like the '91, though.
