    The shifter is gated. You essentially choose the top gear. If desiring to control shifts, just don't open up the next upshift until you're ready for the truck to do so.

    For the auto in that situation, a running start would be best. Say, 3rd gear, get it to about 3k RPM by the base of the hill and hold it there during the climb.

    Can you truly "lug" in the manual sense? No. But you can't truly stall in the manual sense either so...pick yer greater evil?

    I get what you're saying.

    I've decided on getting another manual. After reading some of the comments in this thread the auto was tempting, but I'm not likely to be doing any technical wheeling where a clutch is a hinderance. I'd rather keep the tighter control offered by a manual... and the fun factor of jamming gears.
