I recently did this Willow Creek and Devil's Hole (3N34X & 3N3FD). While we didn't do all of Devil's Hole (we stopped at +34° 17' 48.56", -117° 7' 57.86") I was amazed at what a stock Tacoma could do. It kept up with a modded FJ. (Jonny)

I agree with you about the way you classify the trails however the second picture you posted is in no way a moderate trail. Thats rattlerock at Windrock, I took that picture. Thats a very difficult trail, granted it may not look as tough as the first one, no IFS taco is going up that trail. Larry and I just pulled up on that rock for a poser shot.

    This trail is hard.

Quite possible. I just picked a photo that "looked" about what a medium looks like. From that angle it's impossible to see what kinds of gaps are between the rocks.

The idea was to give some context to folks with limited experience so they realize stock trucks are pretty limited in their capability...as would be expected.

Fair enough. I agree, it doesnt look very difficult in that picture. To bad pictures dont do justice, those rocks are huge in person.

"Easy" is skewed for me. Anything below level 6 (on a 1-10 scale) is Easy at this point.

I do ALOT of offroading in my stock Toyota, and I only have 30x9.5's! They are very capable of going about anywhere you would want to! I've tackled some pretty intense trails. If you look at the trail and you are absolutely terrified then don't attempt it, but if you say hmm.. im pretty sure I can make it, then you can. Just pick the right path.

    :rubs face:

Firstly, taking different lines is not the same as "going where the other guys went".

Secondly, the fact that people think this is a matter of opinion is the item that makes this thread almost impossible.

Go almost anywhere stock? Almost...let me know when you're following Wyatt:

    Don't forget your spotter.

It is possible to have gobs of fun in a stock truck. I would argue I almost had more fun wheeling when my truck was stock (and when I didn't want to scratch it), because of the added challenge. But no, you cannot "go almost anywhere" in the grand spectrum of wheeling. Not even close.

I'm not rubbed. But there's a lot of inaccurate shit flying around in this thread.

Your statement of "if you think you might make it, you probably can" is probably the best answer in the whole thread so far.

I'm not trying to bust your balls but you must be new to off roading. Sure our trucks are pretty capable but they wont go just about anywhere. You can go almost anywhere on a forest road but if you go on actual off road trails then, in a stock Tacoma, you can do the easy trails and some moderate trails. After that you'll either run out of ground clearance, traction, or both.

off set rims and tires, everything else is original.
I've always done minor off roading with my stock 96 with only wider rims and tires. mines not even 4x4

In my mind, there is quite a difference between "Off-Roading" and "crawling".
Off-Roading being rough dirt roads, sand, mud, snow and generally the entry level to all types off 4x4. Where as crawling involves with big rocks and steep inclines and relatively difficult stuff. You could increase the intensity of the sand, mud, and snow and then that turns them into completely different monsters, just as crawling is the extreme version of the rough dirt roads and so forth... so really were all talking apples and oranges here.

    Consensus:
Yes, stock tacos are decent off-road capable vehicles
No, stock tacos are not good for extreme off-road types.

This is a stock truck running street tires on a trail here in Oregon. He made it all the way through without any damage

I went up the #1 trail at Brown Mountain OHV in mine. Only mods I've done are the rear TSB, 5100's F/R set at .85 on front. I'm also running 265/75/16's. Trail was easy. But about halfway up I found myself wishing for some beefier skids and a set of sliders. Had my dad with me and he acted as a spotter on the way back down. I was very impressed with how my truck handled it. Only caught the hitch once on a rock.

If you plan on doing anything mildly serious invest in a lift and armor.
