We'll see what handles a 5k load better when the combatants are ready. A 2.8L I-4 or 3.5L V6. Then let's see what the "girl" motor is. As of right now 3.0L I-4 diesel medium duties are built to handle 17k+ GVWR but the Tacoma is maxed out at 5500 GVWR.

There are no Girly Diesel motors silly :D , nobody is making high revving car Diesel motors. A lot of Cars outside US get Truck diesels to save on Development. Toyota used to be cool and put truck motor in the car (like 22re went into Celicas) Now they going opposite.

True, but you can not pass J test with crappy engine, and it looks like 7GR could only get 6800Lb
Now Chevy Colorado can claim best towing capacity in midsize class with their 7000 lb.

I am not partial to the 2nd or 3rd gen. I do want a fuel efficient/reliable engine with as much hp/torque as possible.
You MAY have a point with main bearings but we have yet to find out but the rest of your points are questionable IMHO
    1. Oil quantity---in required only requires oil pan from the factory---internal passages/oil pump can be factory modified if required
    2. Cooling capacity---water pump and radiator capacity---easily provided from the factory
    3. Head gasket---Really?! If needed it will be provided from the factory

Once again I am not partial to either, but I am open minded enough to see the possibilities of the new engine.
Talk about fanboys...it seems a few of the 2nd gen people like "the pot calling the kettle black".

I may get a 15 or a 16, not decided yet (I really like both).

Not can we please get back to the topic?

    OMG 200 lbs!!

I wonder if the the GM Diesel loses towing capacity, just like the Ram 1500. The Ecodiesel tows like crapola.

Yes, very true. But alot of the people on here think that a lower displacement diesel cant even hang at all because it has lower HP. If a 3L diesel has enough power for a truck that with a trailer can gross 20k+ pounds, it will be OK in a mid-size PU.

My piece of junk 93 Fuso 3.9L turbo can easily go 60+ mph when grossing 15k+ and its a cube! Will a 4.0L or 3.5L Tacoma even move grossing that kind of weight? Who knows. Diesel is very underestimated.

Is that the F450. The F450 shits on everything else for towing due to it's medium duty truck brake system, frame, transmission, axles, and differential. Those are the things that determine towing capacity.

I think a low HP Diesel will have a narrow power band like a heavy Diesel does, and therefore either need more than 6 gears or a minor miracle to perform nearly as well as a gas for daily driving.

You can gear any motor to do nearly anything. That's a fact. What's less certain is how well the motor will perform in a given task with the gearing it receives. Semi's and heavy trucks don't need to accelerate fast. They're basically road freight trains. If the Colorado performs like a SuperDuty Diesel or, worse, a semi then they won't have much success selling them to 90% of Colorado buyers.

The funny thing about the diesel guys on this forum is that they rarely actually have a 3/4 ton modern Diesel in there driveway. I own a gaser 3/4 ton, we have 3/4 ton Diesels at work, and most of my customers have 3/4 tons of both varieties. They both have merits. Trust me, the Diesel advantage or gasoline advantages aren't as large as it's being made out to be even with those bigger engines.

150k+ plus hard miles we've put on our 2005 Sierra Duramax truck plus other experience I have too. I could go on and on about why that particular truck is better than a comparable gas of similar year. BUT, I admit things have changed alot and these new diesel 3/4 and 1 ton rigs have got so ridiculously expensive they're tough to get and most should save their coin and get a 6.4L gas V8 gas ram over a 6.7L diesel.

I'm trying to separate the 2 categories here. There's the little I-4 diesel and 6.7L Ram, 6.6L GM, 6.7L Ford. Some people want to group them together but not me. I think the I-4 Duramax will be a good motor for the mid size truck.

I agree with the stuff in bold

Back when you bought the Sierra I think your only other option was the 7.something liter engine, which was a massive 7 mpg turd.

I think the little I4 could be a great motor. I just hope they got the tuning and gearing right going with the 6 speed from the gas 3.6 L on both motors.

The Duramax motor will be a novelty motor for those who buy it. It will probably get 30+ mpg but with a a ~$3K initial buy in fee. Towing might a smidge more than the 3.6 liter but don't expect capacities to drift into the Silverado's towing realm. GM deliberately discourages any capability overlap. That is why the 4.3 Silverado V6 is not offered in the Colorado. At any rate, it's good GM is offering up what the people have said they want. Competition benefits everyone, not just Tacoma fans.

Thats right.... OMG stupid Toyota could not have squeezed extra 200lb from 2016 truck to at least match Colorado? And that's with 4.30 gears.
Crap put 4.30 in 4.0 L and watch that thing tow.

Why does the 3rd gen Tacoma fill up your tampon so quick? Im curious why it swells up your vag? Get a F450 and be done with it, I hear they tow more then a Tacoma

Nothing to do with squeezing. There's an standard out now for tow ratings that all manufactures, except Nissan, will be adhering to. So at the end of the day the Tacoma rated 3% less on that scale. A WHOLE 3% :D.

The 4.3 L isn't anything special. Hell I don't think either the 5.3 L or 4.3 L are anything close to what the competition is offering in the same truck for the same price. It would of been a better engine for the Colorado to start with but, as we keep trying to remind you, the engine has little to do with tow ratings on these tiny trucks with tiny axles, tiny rear differentials, braking systems taken from there CUV cousins, etc.

If 3% is so insignificant, than why Toyota couldn't achieve that extra 3% with pretty much the same engine and 4.30 gears ?
J test is simple, and its actually good way to judge the truck.
Thats why 270HP is probably the correct number for new truck, What its going to be funny is if those equally crappy MPG numbers posted on international forums are accurate too.
Thats what happens when you cheap.

HP has nothing to do with towing. Nothing at all.

WTF is the J-test. Do you mean the new SAE J-2807 standardization? I've never heard about a J-test on a technical bulletin or materials that I have for buying trucks. I'll trust the new SAE test for towing vehicles. At least it'll be easy to compare. If things are within a 1000 lbs, to me, that's very negligible IRL.

3% isn't worth chasing. Toyota has never been about chasing that last 3%. Look at the Tundra. Bigger motor than an F150, yet it tows 1000 lbs less per category. Toyota isn't about getting the highest tow ratings. They just set there sights close. They are reporting the real SAE number I'm sure. GM on the other hand...

Toyota went with a higher gear ratio because the 7 GR won't have the same grunt really low like the 1 GR. It's pretty normal to do that on trucks when you change to a motor with less torque down at, say, 1500 rpm. It doesn't reflect the entire torque curve though.

Are you reading Chinese now :p. If it gets crappy mpg it'll be right there with the Cheby. IRL numbers on feully for the 3.6 L have been way out from Chevrolet claims.

Why are you suggesting Toyota is cheap? Everyone is going to unified structure. It's worked for many companies building good trucks. GM is really the last company using a V8 that's not used in many other vehicles. That's probably why GM likes to charge a few more K than Ford or Dodge too.
