A friend of mine a general manager of a toyota dealership claimed it was about a 40 hp gain over the current motor.

That's pretty much what I'm expecting, somewhere in the 280's and better MPG, not sure where the torque will come in yet though.

It makes sense. The people who want like 350 hp and the ability to tow 10lbs plus are unrealistic. The tacoma is still a midsized truck. If they want that go buy fullsize.

Exactly, mid-size is just that, if you want more then move up to full size. I think coming in @ 280's will be great along
with the increased MPG and the new look both inside and out. I'm going to miss my 2011, I've got it modded just the
way I like it. When I talked to the dealer they said swapping the wheels & tires I just bought would be no issue.

I'm going to remove my CAI, put the original back on and then sell it, re-tint, vent visors and put the n-fab side bars
back on and I'll be good to go.

Read the comment below to understand the comparison I was making. And "Dual VVTi 4.0L with a 6-speed auto > "new" 3.5L Tacoma." is a completely baseless statement. You have no more information about the new 3.5 than anyone here, so you can't possibly accurately make that statement.

The 3.5L will have NO MORE HP or torque than the 3.6L in the Colorado. It just won't. That's what I'm basing my statement on. I prefer a truck that has some useful hp and torque, not at Acura NSX rpm's. But maybe you like towing up hills at redline and think that's "fine", more power to you. Updating the tried and true 4.0L and sticking a 6-speed behind it would make for a better truck than the 3.5L which comes from cars, vans, and SUV's. But Toyota know what they are doing in trying to please the soccer mom and commuter crowd who will never actually use it as a truck.

The 2nd gen was a big step up from the 1st gen, not the case with the 2 1/3 gen over the 2nd gen. I'm gonna laugh when towing comparisons come out and the 2nd gen performs better than the comparable 2016. But at least the 2016 will be able to take off from a stoplight like crazy, that ~285 HP is going to be very "useful"...

Then you should have said Chevy 3.6L > Toyota 3.5L, but even that is baseless. You have no evidence to support your claim! You also need to realize what these manufacturers are trying to do, with federal emissions laws becoming more and more strict, Toyota built the new Tacoma for the future. With the new 2017 and 2019 (I think those are the correct years) emissions regulations in mind. The 4.0 is an old motor that cannot hold up to the new regulations. Plain and simple.

I love this gen argument. Outside of internet forums no one gives a shit about gens. It is an updated model, who cares what the internet lists it as when defining forums.
If you don't like your imagined hp/tq numbers then don't buy the truck, no one will lose sleep over it.

Haha so true... I'm gonna start calling it the 6th Gen just for the hell of it. Each facelift was a new generation right? :stirthepot::stirthepot::stirthepot:

Yea, seriously. Want to get 40 mpg and haul alot of stuff get a Jetta TDi wagon.

My "evidence" will soon come out and I will be right. The 2016 will have 280-290 hp at 6000+ rpm which will be useful in drag racing. Toyota is putting in the 3.5L because it has potential to get significantly better mpg than the 4L could get, it doesn't have anything to do with emissions. Surveys are out and most mid size truck buyers will never tow or even use the bed for anything a sedan couldn't carry. The 2016 is made for those people, not the people of this forum.

Again, I'm waiting for a long term head to head of a comparable 2015 vs 2016 V6's in SR5 trim. I bet the 2015 will be the better "truck" and the 2016 will be a better car with a bed.

Yes, because being concerned with expenditures is "girly." Grow up. Besides, they were discussing government regulations, their preferences weren't even mentioned.

This sentence makes no sense... MPG and emissions go hand in hand.

Which would be great unless you needed 4WD, ground clearance, be able to tow a decent amount, etc.

Arguing based on assumptions, regardless of which side you're arguing, is pointless.

Government regulations on fuel economy and emissions has a lot to do with the trend of downsizing engine sizes in recent history. The tow ratings are higher in the 3rd gen then the 2nd by 300 pounds.
The truck is supposed to be better off-road. Stronger frame better ride but since it went down by 1/2 a litre in displacement some people think it's a soccer mom car now. LOL
