I'm hoping this is true. Actually I'd like to see this motor pull 280 ft lbs of torque. Class leading gasoline engine torque matters.

Well it's not. If only 6800 lb towing capacity was not good indicator, than 270 hp should be good indicator what are the rest of specs.

2016 new slowest midsize on the market.

Torque will be same or less than current Tacoma. I think this because at unveiling all the reps said the new Tacoma would have more HP, towing capacity and MPG. If it had more torque they would brag that up too, but they didn't. Looking at all the similar displacement V6's in mid or full-size offerings today (Ram 3.6, Honda Pilot/Ridgeline 3.5l, normally aspirated 3.5l F-150, GM twins 3.6), none of them get above 270 ft lbs of torque. Yes, it is possible Toyota has some torque secret up their sleeve but probably not. I hate to agree with BlueT but 270 hp + 6800 lbs towing capacity = less torque. All in all not a deal breaker for me, so long as QDR is upheald.
I think Toyota will keep segment crown for some time to come, but many are going to jump ship when the baby Duramax is released, new Frontier is released, and new Ridgeline (yes, I now it's not a real truck) is released.

While I am rambling, I'd really like to see a 2016 DCLB with color-matching topper!

Yup Torque is going to be way less than our 1GR engine.
The only reason why new engine can claim 270 HP is because it can spin faster with less torque.

    HP = (Torque X RPMs)/ 5252
And the big reason why it can spin faster is because its car engine with smaller/thinner (aka weaker components)
To me that's absolute deal breaker. Well that and other crap that was put on the truck from highlander/rav4.

And why's that? Smaller displacement (less friction), smarter valve timing (basically a 2 generation jump from the 1GR), and direct injection are all technologies that will improve efficiency. The VVT improvements are massive over the 1GR. This engine will be way more flexible at making the valve timing match the conditions.

Didnt miss it, just concentrated on the fact that it was a reg cab with a non-stock engine. I would imagine that throwing in new cam is a little easier than doing a full engine/trans swap. Any way you look at it, they did some nice work.

Wow the anger in this thread. As most people have said this engine will be fine as long as the torque curve and gearing gives a similar ride and power to this truck that the 1GR did.

Since when does the Tacoma use highlander or rav parts? Does someone have a parts list to back that up or just likes to hate on a truck they don't plan on ever owning...

If you like the current Tacoma and want the 1GR go ahead and pull the trigger . If you want mpg though this new truck will likely do 10-20 percent better IRL, or at least that's my guess.

Here's a thought; where did the article's author get that 270 number? The Highlander?

Until Toyota publishes it, it's still speculative.

I imagine any Toyota engineer reading these threads is probably pissing himself from laughing too hard!
Come on page after page, post after post, nothing but BS and speculation.
Why would Toyota want to release anything, when they are getting this much attention for nothing!
