Jetta is "ok" for a commuter, pretty much ends there, can't use it for much else without destroying it. At least with the Taco you can beat on it and it will take you more places the Jetta simply can't go. I rented a Subaru Outback for 2 weeks to see if I liked it enough to buy one, I was so annoyed with it by the end of the two weeks, because it wouldn't do the things I could do in the Taco. Gave out a big ol' "aaaahhhh" when I climbed back in my Taco.

Do think 30 mpg is achievable in a Taco, but it won't be cheap. (ie diesel)

    I agree...
I think the motor will have MPG even or slightly greater than that of the Colorado. By slightly I mean 1 more mpg lol

D4S injection will allow for a higher compression engine which will make more power across the entire powerband... People get too hung up over the 3.5 vs 4.0 number.

People also say the DCLB is "too difficult to park." I have no issues even parallel parking.

Mine is not usable half the year (road salt covers it completely) so I got used to not bothering with it most of the time.

Toyota has never really cared about having the best specs in any given segment except maybe the Prius. The domestic automakers have always put an emphasis on power and specs, but usually at the expense of QDR. I agree that the new 3.5 will probably have less overall power than then Colorado/Canyon. The 6800 lb towing capacity is another indicator of this.
My question is, who cares? The Nissan Frontier already has more torque than the Tacoma. GM had a V8 in their first-gen Colorado/Canyon but Toyota easily carried the segment when those 1st gen pickups were still on the market.
As for me (and I am sure most people who buy Tacomas), I'd rather have a quality motor that has 15 less HP than a powerful V6 that will crap out before 150,000 miles.
Besides, the trailer you see in my image to the left is the heaviest thing I will ever tow with my Tacoma. It's 3500 lbs loaded. The new V6 shouldn't hardly break a sweat towing that much.

Honestly if you consistently tow 6800 or 7000 pounds you should get a full-size instead. Its better to step up then tow at the limit.
so the 200 pound difference is a moot point.

I agree, but towing a 3500 lbs trailer maybe a dozen times a year is perfect for a Tacoma. My current Tacoma can tow 5,000 lbs. I wouldn't tow 5,000 lbs than any further than across town.

Not really a moot point. My point is that the lesser towing capacity of the gen 3 Tacoma more-than-likely means the overall power of the gen 3 Tacoma will be less than the current GM twins. Sheesh...

The people asking about hp/tq/mpg numbers are the same ones that will lift the truck and complain about its lack of power and terrible mpg. Too much speculation anyway, just wait til they release the brochure.

The towing capacity is going up to 6,800 lbs which is 300 lbs more that the current max. I don't know where you heard it was going down. That information is from Mike Sweers, Toyota head of engineering for the trucks. http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2015/05/up-close-tacoma-chief-engineer-goes-deep.html

Where did you hear towing was going to be less?

I'm predicting like 280 hp but that is me speculating.

The Tacoma will likely be less because Toyota built the 7GR for truck and 4WD SUV applications. GM's engine is really a CUV engine at the end of the day. The GM 3.6 L has to stay at high RPM's when towing, passing, and well just about all the time to put out the power the truck needs with any load because it was designed for CUV applications. I'm guessing Toyota will tune the 3.5 L to have roughly 270-300 HP and a similar amount of torque like most truck engines, which will mean the engine isn't screaming all the time because there is more power available down low and that will likely lead a longer engine life in the Tacoma over the Colorado.

That's all speculation of course but it makes sense.

Towing less than the Colorado/Canyon's 7000 lb capacity. Yes, the GM twins and Tacoma are different. My only point was that the towing # given by Sweers at the Overland expo makes me suspect the engine will be overall less powerful than the GM twins 3.6 V6. I am not talking crap about Toyota. I'd rather have a quality motor than 10 extra hp.

I think the 280-290 hp will be accurate. Torque will not change much, maybe even drop a bit.
