I’m probably most annoyed with mine when the truck pulls when at a stop ...then gags when I want it to go.

    Quick question:

What other truck does Toyota have an option to put it in? The V8 Tundra?

    Uh, no.
Just because an engine designated as in the same family, does not mean it is the exact same engine with same internal components. Notice how all these vehicles (below) share the same engine family, but they all produce hp & torque at different rpm with Tacoma producing the most torque at the lowest rpm. They also have different engine number id.

"in the Tacoma the engine specifications are 278 hp (207 kW; 282 PS) at 6000 rpm and 265 lb⋅ft (359 N⋅m) at 4600 rpm.[9] In the Lexus RX 350 the engine specifications are 295 hp (220 kW; 299 PS) at 6300 rpm and 267 lb⋅ft (362 N⋅m) at 4700 rpm respectively. In the Lexus IS350 and GS350 the engine specifications are 311 hp (232 kW; 315 PS) at 6600 rpm and 280 lb⋅ft (380 N⋅m) at 4800 rpm respectively."

Many years ago GM produced a 350cu engine for passenger vehicles, and the same family also a 350cu was used on HD trucks. The difference was the truck engine produced torque at a lower rpm and the crank and related internal components were not interchangeable. You also could hear the difference.

Unfortunately, the people you are arguing with probably don’t realize that Ford, GM, and Chrysler put the same basic motors in their sports cars, their vans, their trucks, and their sedans for years.

This whole “truck motor” idea is a imaginary figment that looms large in the addled minds of 2nd Gen Taco owners. It’s something they can grasp at, and almost hold as their own.

I drove trucks for years with car motors and never thought anything about it. I just realized the only truck only engine that I owned was the Ford 4.9L 300 CID six.

I think we will see more sharing of car and truck engines in the future.

I wonder when EVs take over if there will be “truck electric motors” and “car electric motors” in the eyes of some.

I was happy with all 4 of my 2nd gens. Loved all of them. My 3rd gen sucked. Especially on the interstate. With any headwind at all, the RPM’s would skyrocket and I’d get awful mpg. 2nd gens didn’t do that.

Can't you see he is in pain?

He wanted to love his 3rd gen, but his 3rd gen didn't love him back.

That's why he still haunts the forum.

    A tragedy really...

This is how this site works:

-A lot of people don’t really think for themselves.
-A lot of people repeat things they read, so they feel smart and included.
-A lot of people never paid any attention to what an automatic transmission does “automatically” before joining TW, and now spend a lot of time thinking about it.

These people spend every moment of every drive in their 3G Tacoma thinking about what Smitty (OG complainer) and those that repeat his mantra, say about their transmission, until it becomes a huge insecurity for them. It consumes their life and they sell the truck to make it go away. But the story does not end there..........

.....deep in their hind-brain something nags at them, and confuses them. They want to be a hero for ditching their Tacoma, but somehow they feel a bit like a loser. They secretly, or subconsciously, miss the Tacoma, because they start to doubt that it was that bad. Their brain knows it was actually pretty normal. This conflict within surfaces in public when they log back onto TW to spit off on how much they hated the truck, looking for some sort of encouragement from others over the bad decision to sell. They hope desperately that others will concur, and they will be the guy that had the courage to sell, but alas, no..........

Tacoma is a rad truck. That’s why it’s popular. Mine drives great. I accept it is not a super powerful vehicle, but enjoy the drive nonetheless. I always look forward to driving it.

Go look at the bore and stroke for our 3.5 and tell me that was meant to make low end power.

And what 350 (besides the diesel garbage) could you not change cranks with the like engine family? The TQ difference would be from cam and longer intake runners.

All kidding aside, your post is one of the most eloquent explanations I have read here.

Most of the times I read these posts from former Tacoma owners thinking...well, I will just keep that to myself this time.

    Thanks!
