Had mine changed at 64k...I thought Toyota recommended the change at 60k? Another 5k until I hit 124k, and I'll have it changed it again then.

125K cause there was no documentation from the P/O that it had been done.

    What engine did you have?

Did anything get bent when the belt broke?? Depending on design valves in the head can get bent when the belt breaks.

Ironic that I see this thread today, when I just dropped off my wife's 4Runner at the mechanics shop to get it's timing belt changed. Her 4Runner is a 1998 with the 3.4L. We had the belt changed at 90K and now it is getting done again at 182K. My wife drives the piss out of this 4Runner and it just keeps going. I told her when my trucks paid off I want to get her a new 4Runner. She said whats the point if this one still gets me to where I want to go. The bad part about this timing belt preventive maintenance is the cost. About $300 for parts and $240 for labor for a grand total of $540. New parts purchased: water pump, timing belt, top & bottom radiator hoses, all 3 of the belts, thermostat w/ new gasket, antifreeze. The water pump, timing belt, thermostat and antifreeze were purchased from my local Toyota dealer. The belts and hoses were from my local auto parts store. I'm glad that Toyota now puts chains on new vehicles.

I did mine at 90K, with all the belts, the water pump, fluids, etc. The water pump was leaking, so I'm glad I got this service done. My mechanic advised he sees the pumps go bad faster than the timing belt.

the 3.4 (the engine we're all talking about here) is a "non interference engine" so nothing will be damaged if the belt breaks. You'll just be left stranded and it might tear up your timing belt cover.

mine was changed at 100,000 the first time then i just changed the timing belt, tensioner and water pump, all three belts, plugs wires distributor cap and button at 204,000, then turned around a week later and the fan blew up and tore up the radiator and shroud.

after seeing how good of shape the original was in at 110k miles on my 03 xtra cab, i decided the only time i'll ever have another one changed is when the water pump starts leaking. ..or it breaks

I changed mine myself the second time the truck ever had one, somewhere around 315K or so. If you do it yourself, be sure not to let one of the cam sprokets slip and turn with out the belt on it. That happened to me and I thought I got it back where it needed to be. However when everything was back together, you could tell that the timing was retarded just a little. Less power and fuel mileage.

I ended up going back into the belt around 328K and I reset the timing back right.

My advice to whoever does it themselves, set the timing mark on the crank till the marks line up, and the marks on the cam sprokets line up with the marks on the heads, and everything will be just fine. If one of the sprokets slips and jumps with the belt off, you'll have a solid reference point to twist it back to so that the timing will still be right.
