Hey all, recently started seeing a lot of leaking under my car parked in the driveway. Looked to be engine oil but i took it in and was told it was leaking oil from the front oil pump seal and/ or bushing and that I should replace the tranny altogether. Any input is appreciated thank you !!

probably just needs a seal replaced. If you're not experiencing any goofy shift patterns, I'd guess that the tranny is just fine.

If the trans if shifting fine and has been maintained properly there is no need to replace it. Clean up EVERYTHING with degreaser so you can see where the leak is coming from. Pay attention to the transmission OUTPUT where the driveshaft goes into the trans, on a prerunner those seals are known to leak over time and could be your source (and is WAY easier to change vs a rear main seal on the motor / input seal on the trans)

Yes it shifts fine, also this tacoma is 2012 4 cyl prerunner with 78k miles. Although this is the first time I’ve gotten the transmission fluid changed or even serviced in 40k miles.. I could’ve just screwed myself… only engine oil change

You can drop the transmission and replace the front transmission seal, take off the transmission pan and replace the transmission filter. I recommend that you do a manual flush and that means manually cycling transmission oil through the transmission. You would also have to change the transmission filter and it wouldn't hurt if you changed it out before the manual flush and changed it out again after the manual flush. I would not personally have a transmission machine flush done.

No one has mentioned it so I will say stay away from the shop that recommended you replace a good transmission because of a leak. If it shifts fine fix the seal and go about your life with a few thousand less spent.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
Let it leak, fluid will provide for rust protection.

Lol, replace the whole transmission because of a leaky engine oil seal. Do you have a manual transmission? Were they maybe talking about replacing the clutch instead?

Makes no sense why a shop would recommend replacing the transmission unless there was a real serious problem with the transmission. Other than them trying to take you for a $ ride
