Sounds like you need a SPOT pager or Garmin In Reach type of device in your travels..

Glad you made it out okay.. thats definitely some sketchy shit that could have come out much worse!!

Yeah, when I was planning this trip, I guess I just didn't realize how much I would enjoy being off-road and let it get the best of me (especially since I wasn't prepared for many of the problems that could arise)... But yes, it was a lesson learned, and if I plan to do that in the future, there are many things I will prepare for -- especially having redundancy with my tools :). I never want to feel that type of fear again!!

I did not run into the tree.. that picture doesn't do it justice how steep that drop off on the front was though... it was pretty scary trying to rock it back and forth (forwards/backwards) because if it grabbed at the wrong time, it would have made it much worse.

These are the kind of experiences that shape your life and make for interesting stories. Most people wouldn't have the balls to travel across the country and camp by themselves. Good for you man.

Note: A pair of good vise grips will usually get a lock nut off. I say usually unless it was put-on with an impact wrench.

Dude !! TOOLS TOOLS TOOLS. I carry more tools than I ever might need and two hydro jacks just incase. When I take the family to the beach I pack my tools before anything else. You never know what might happen. Just learn from this and make your next mod a nice tool box.

I really appreciate it -- and no doubt, I always enjoy my alone time, but this definitely took me out of my comfort zone and was an amazing experience. I've always enjoyed camping away from everything, and this just made me realize if I want to take it to the next level (and really be off the grid), I need to prepare better and do a lot more research!

Just a couple of the good times from my trip ;).

Did a 5,500 mile road trip from KY through UT, AZ, etc. last September (See link in sig for pics). I'd never travel without the proper tools to try to get myself out of these situations but I did have a scare myself on the trip. Four wheeled CO and some of AZ, was going down the road at almost dark and hit a bump while my truck proceeded to shut off. Luckily it was a blacktop road but I was still in the middle of no where and not in familiar land. Could not find the problem after checking fuses, etc. Thought maybe my fuel pump was going out because it would start but would just die. Finally after about an hour or so of searching, found my intake had came loose under the cover and was throwing the 02 sensor causing it to shut off. Put the intake back up with a hose clamp and it ran fine. Pretty sketchy being 5K miles from home and something happening but was a fantastic experience traveling alone and trouble shooting problems and seeing the land how I wanted to see it.

And this, my friends, is why I NEVER put those stupid locking lug nuts on my wheels.
