i guess that depends on the speed you are driving , having thought about it , I would have to agree .

The speeds I usually drive at on my little rural roads probably allows for a bit more opportunity for avoidance than the speeds highways etc are driven at .

This was the response of all the students in class too.

He commenced to showing us formulas on the dry erase board that proved the car slowing down and traveling at a slower speed(i.e. the braking person) takes more of the force transfer than the vehicle not slowing down and going faster.(i.e. the drunk driver) I don't remember all the calculations, nor do I feel like looking them up since Physics isn't my thing, but what he showed us made sense.

Well from the idea that you're coming from, it's all about inertia right? The object with more force is going to release more of it on impact than an object with less.

    We're both right. ;)

Brake, but not uncontrollably and never, never, never swerve. Your life is more important than a deer.

yeah, I was definately not saying you were wrong. I do believe also like you that the drunk bouncing around helps too. The physics calculations he did on the board with speed, inertia, force and all that jiberish to prove it was very interesting though.

I was wasting my life yesterday thinking back to that college class:)mad:) and came up with an analogy that kind of explains what he was saying in class.

If you took 2 matchbox cars, or any other object, and crashed them into each other at the same speed, they would both feel the same force and bounce backwards at the same rate and distance.(all things perfect)

If you put one car on the floor not moving, and then take the other one and slam it into the one not moving, what happens? The one not moving flies backwards and the one you slammed into it continues moving forward at a slower rate therefore not absorbing as much of the impact.

Basically the car not moving, or moving slower takes more force.

I hit a deer with my Corolla doing 60mph on the highway. I first saw it when it landed on my hood. It was a 3 lane highway, I was in the right lane as I usually am. You may have a better chance of seeing the deer if you are in the center or right lanes but it happens quick. $4000 worth of damage.

I'm going to argue this one just for kicks (so kick me, lol) If I hang a baseball from a sting at face level and you run into it at 10mph, do you think it will hurt more or less than if you are standing still and I throw the baseball at 10mph and hit you in the face?

On another note, there's a vid on youtube of a crash test where a new car and a old car (70's or 60's) of same make and model were crashed into each other, left front to left front. Examination of the crash dummies showed the dummy in the new car walking away with minor cuts and bruising while the dummy in the old car was killed on impact.

This happened here a couple years ago. A guy was sitting in his SUV at an intersection waiting for the light to change when a pickup carrying an ATV crossed the intersection and a car turned left in front of the pickup and the two crashed. The ATV flew out of the pickup, hit the SUV and killed the driver.

One last babble. I saw a windshield from the shuttle spaceship that had hit a paint chip which left a two inch gouge. The shuttle was in geo stationary orbit and the paint chip was moving in the opposite direction at 50,000 mph. In space movement is only relative to a point of reference. The chip could have been stationary and the shuttle move at 50K.

(Kicks are for Trids, that's another story)

Not going to read every post to see if it has been mentioned, so I am sorry if its a repost. If you floor the gas prior to hitting a dear and it causes enough damage that you have to report it, or if they check the computer for insurance reasons, they will see that you accelerated hard right before impact and they can deny an insurance claim stating that you hit it intentionally....
