When in 4L, I've noticed two things Jerking/Grabbing...is this "normal?"

You are not in 4L, hence the dinging and the 4Lo light is flashing. Come to a complete stop, put it in neutral and then 4L. Then put in drive. If you have issues, then go from D to R a few times and it should lock into 4L. Come to a complete stop and back to N to go back from 4L to 4H. Never put in 4L on a hard dry surface. You need some slip on the road to use 4L.

Thanks guys, I don't use it too often so maybe with more practice I will get it right.

I was driving my ATV in my yard a few weeks ago and had a good chance to illustrate what is happening. When you go around a corner each of the 4 wheels takes a different path. The inside front wheel has the least distance to travel, the outside rear wheel the most. When operating in 2wd each wheel can turn at different speeds to account for this. When in 4X4 the transfer case locks the front and rear axles together and it tries to force all 4 wheels to turn at the same speed. But for this to happen the inside wheels MUST spin and slip some on the ground since they are now turning at the same speed but have much less distance to travel.

As long as you're on a surface that will allow the wheels to slip some it doesn't do any damage. But on pavement, or even off road in high traction areas it really puts the drivetrain in a bind. You COULD have a catastrophic failure of your transfer case or other parts of your drivetrain. But that would be rare. Even if it doesn't fail immediately, you are overstressing components and that will lead to premature parts failure.

You can see how much both of the wheels slipped on inside. The outside front wheel spun slightly. The only wheel that didn't spin during this turn was the outside rear. This was a 1200 lb vehicle on wet ground. Imagine how much stress you're putting on a 4000 lb truck on dry pavement.

I would love to still have a gear lever for 4WD and lock out hubs the electric thing sucks! Yes they will bind on any thing with traction no matter what the truck is it's normal. I can feel it in mine on hard packed snow. It will let you know right away that it's engaged on hard pavement just back up the same way you turned and unlock it. The drive line is pretty tough the tires will slip before it breaks any thing.

4LO is recommended at 5mph or less. Agreed with no 4LO on flat dry terrain (pavement). Also, it's recommended to use 4WD LO and 4WD HIGH as well as the locker if you have it every once in a while so everything stays operational. Owners manual states something about all this.

After having driven many different 4X4 trucks for over the last 40 years, it's normal. Don't worry about it.
Just don't use 4x4 on grippy (dry) surfaces!
