When is Auto LSD better than 4HI for a 4x4?

Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I can't seem to ID a situation where I would hit the VSC Off button to activate the Auto LSD switch instead of going into 4HI. The only thing I can think of is a situation in the winter where roads are dry but still might have patches of snow or ice. In that case, you wouldn't want to run 4HI on miles of dry pavement, but you might not want the annoyance of regulated engine output when you hit a patch.

Thoughts? I'm basically ignoring this feature and have gotten around OK so far.

ETA: I've read for about an hour about this feature - thanks in advance to DK and others for the stickies and posts.

Useful information. I was afraid that if I hit that button I would start hallucinating.

OK, so in a situation where you need a tighter turn radius than 4wd allows - that's a pretty specific situation, but a valid point.

The comment about 4WD not engaging is a good one as well, I know that happens sometimes.

    Anyone else have an example?

Other than a tight turn radius as Wiper suggested , I don't think AUTO LSD in 2WD would be specifically better for traction than 4HI

Well I've got a little creek by my house that has a steep paved climb out on to the highway. Lots of loose rocks, wet tires from the ramp etc. Pulling out w/ the just TRAC/VSC results in killing the power coming out as the wheel spin is limited. I press the auto LSD button so I don't lose power pulling out into traffic, definitely works better, 4wd isn't an option on pavement. Not offroad, but that's what I use it for...

Going straight on pavement in 4WD is fine

Thanks for that, I'm pulling out into traffic on a highway - it's not going straight.

So, it sounds safe to say that Auto-LSD in 2HI has limited benefit for a 4x4.

snow/slippery roads is a great use for ALSD, specially in slow speeds or parking lots
