have a 4spd auto tranny. Iv heard either 100k miles or 60k miles and not sure which one to believe, so i figured the folks on the 4cyl forum would know best..

Also, what fluid would be best to use? I am sure there is a specific type that needs used.

manual says 10.8 qt of Toyota atf type t-IV. Is there any equivelant to that, or is that what I have to use. I havnt looked into it, but id assume Toyota asks an arm and a leg for their fluid

That may be the total capacity, but you will only get about 3-4 qt out by pulling the drain plug. The rest is up in the torque converter and other galleys and passages inside the transmission.

I changed mine at 60k miles, Toyota T-IV fluid is not that expensive, check Amazon. I drained & refilled then drove a couple thousand miles, repeated 2x. I figure about 80% of the fluid is fresh, good enough for me.
    Toyota T-IV fluid.
