When to do first oil change? I disagree with dealer!

So, I just bought a new 2012 4 cylinder Tacoma. The dealer tells me it has synthetic oil and doesn't need its first oil change until 10,000 miles. On every vehicle Ive ever owned Ive always changed the oil for the first time at 500 mile to get rid of any break-in little bits of metal that may be floating around in the oil. Then I do a second change at 2000. Now with Dino Oil I used to do oil changes every 2000 miles (I know some dont agree), but with the Amsoil I like I am comfortable going 10,000 miles per change (Amsoil suggests every 25,000 miles). My question is: Isn't it still a good idea to do a 500 mile oil change? If my Taco has synthetic in it already, I guess it would be okay to stay with synthetic, as most synthetic oil companies say not to switch to synthetic until 5000 miles. SO, what should I do?

I did my first oil change at 750m with M1, then changed again at 4000m with M1. After that, I've been doing changes at approx 7500 miles with M1. 7 years and 90k miles later, its still running as strong as brand new.
I also changed out front and rear diff oil and transfer case at 4000m as well for M1 gear oil. There were a lot more shavings than I expected when I did those.

Oil is cheap. Change it when you want to. I know Honda puts additives to help break in when you buy a new car and recommends that the first oil change occur at 5k miles but that is Honda.

It comes down to what feels right to you.

Dealer told me 8000km. I did mine at 4500km, then I'll do the next one at 8000.

I did not change over to synthetic until 3k and that was my first oil change. For the first 3k I babied the truck and never used cruise control so I could alternate RPM's.

In the end opinions are like assholes and everyone has a different one so whatever you feel is right after research is what you should do.

Now I go 5-10k on Mobil1. I have never tested the oil, but I know someone who ran 30k with a v8 Tundy and his oil tested pretty dam good and he was told it should of been changed at 20k.

I will say this: I gather you bought a Toyota truck for the brand, reputation, and known reliability. As soon as you did that you don't trust them anymore? Think about it.

Good point... the OP is just looking for a little extra protection and peace of mind.

Change your oil whenever you want to, but I say 500 miles is too soon. These motors are run at the factory before installation, plus today's engine manufacturing tolerances are so tight that there won't be a whole lot of those break-in little bits of metal, and the filter will easily catch most of those anyway. So don't worry. I suggest the first oil change at 2k miles and after that do whatever OCI is in the manual. Also use whatever type/weight oil recommended in the owner's manual. My 2006 2.7 came with 5w30 dino oil and that's what I'll continue using.

Im about to do my first one at 500miles. been exercising the engine straight from the factory. going to continue to do so until the first recommended oil change to get all that stuff out. next one will probably be at 2000miles.

Check again with your service contract. At least the 2011 2TR-FE was an exception to the 10K mile change interval. Once I pointed this out to the dealer they had no problem changing it every 5K for free.

I also didnt wait 5K for my first change. My first change was at 1K and then 5K and 5K ever since. I just didnt trust that first change to be at 5K.

i get mine at 1000...get rid of all the break in gunk, then another at 3k. Then every 5k with synth oil is fine as long as your not hauling or doing a lot of engine load stuff.

My service dept. told me the same exact thing last week.
my 2012 2.7L came with the toyota 0w-20 or whatever the new toyota synthetic is.
I brought up the same concerns to him and he continued to explain to me that this was the schedule that toyota recommends and stands behind.
5000mi service is tire rotation & top off fluids.
10000mi is oil change and tire rotation top off etc.

at first I thought ok that makes sense but the more I thought about it...
"I have the std. warranty, so toyota will 'stand behind it' only until the end of my warranty"
    then its on my dime.

I have my 5000mi service scheduled & my plan is to change mine myself at 5000mi. (staying with Toyota 0w-20)
Then letting them change it again at the 10000mi service.

now that I've read this thread I'm looking into changing the diff oil sooner rather than later

Check your manual. I am *almost* positive my 2012 2.7L 4cyl gets 0w-20 synthetic every 5000 miles.

I will check my manual in a couple hours after work.

Thanks for all the input, I'll be doing my first change sooner than later, and I'll do it myself. Cheap insurance!

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
My dealer gave me a lifetime warranty on the engine and drive train. I follow the Toyota book to the letter on the scheduled maint. They try to talk me out of it but I will get them back when/if I have to use that warranty.

I follow the book on the maintenance.
