Lol everyone says 10-15 years when very very few actually accomplish this because... life. There won't be any shavings and if there were, that's fine because shavings will never ever get into places where it could hurt. You need to worry about particles that you cannot see with the naked eye.

If you want to sit and wait 2-3 hours just so your tires get rotated more power to you. Learn to do it yourself as well as your oil. It costs upwards of $28 for oil and a filter if you ask Jeff Bezos nicely. Takes 30 minutes the first time and only gets faster after that.
Your time is more valuable than a couple of free oil changes, I hope!

just food for thought I read something not too long ago that oil takes about 2-3k miles before all of the anti-wear additives have fully bonded to the surfaces inside of the motor.

The difference is probably unnoticeable, but if you take that into consideration it would put you at 4-5k for first oil change even though Toyota calls for 10k.

that being said I’ve never had issues changing oil at 1500 miles either. The Tacoma does not use any special factors additives like Honda does.

Actually the two times I went to the dealership I have not waited what I think is a long time. I think the first service I was in and out in 45 minutes. The second service was 90 minutes at most till they came to say it was done. Both were Saturday morning appointments around 9am.
Yeah I could do it myself maybe a little quicker but it makes a service record I want to have in case something happens, not that you can't and you should keep your own service records.
I recommend using the Toyota app. You can enter service records you and other shops do for you besides what the dealership enters. You can also schedule your appointment at the dealership on there too.

I did my first oil change at just under 1000. Autopsied the filter. Some pretty ugly stuff in there. But that's not unusual. I let the dealer do one at about 3000. I'll go with the 5000 from here on out.

I should add that I also sent a sample of the oil I drained out to Blackstone labs and used to do that once a year with my last vehicle just to see how things were going with it. Well they said the oil had some higher metal elements but not anything unexpected for a new engine. That made me glad I did an oil change when I did.

When I got my new 2021 they gave me a window sticker stating my first service 8,000km or 6 months from day one.First maintenance is changing oil and going over the entire vehicle to check for anything unusual during the break-in period.
After this I will be going to my regular shop for maintenance in the future and going back to the dealer only for warranty repairs if any.

I had the dealer do one of the free oil changes but only because my truck was in for the TSS recall at the same time. I bought a ton of Toyota 0-20 oil from the same dealer and they gave me a very good price on it. Genuine Toyota oil filters from Amazon but the real reason to do it yourself (and do keep receipts and a log of when you do your own maintenance) is that you know it's done right, assuming you actually do know how to do it right yourself. And the same regarding tire rotations. Get yourself a Makita impact driver for quick lug removal and a good torque wrench for putting 'em back on and of course a floor jack and jack stands. Another what I consider essential tool is my Mitutoyo digital caliper which I use to measure the front brake pads while those wheels are off and use the depth gauge on the caliper to measure tread depth for both depth and evenness. And with the reduced pandemic miles, I'm basically changing the oil once a year or at the 5-6K mark. And I just did a calibration on my twenty year old Craftsman torque wrench, which has never been dropped or left wound up and found it was within one or two pounds of being right on so it took just the slightest tweak for it to be perfect, well, at least well within spec.

Why go through all that work to change oil, rotate tires etc etc. When the dealer will do all that for under 100.00 and you come out clean lol.

2-3 hours. I would stay away from that dealer lol. If you are on time for your appointment and the mechanics are on the ball it should not take more that 30- 45 minutes tops unless they find something wrong only if.

It doesn't take 2-3 hrs to sit and wait to get your tires rotated. I've had mine done twice at the dealer...most time sitting was a 1/2 hr when they did the oil change too.

Its also like said 5k miles, or 1 year for the first oil change then 10k miles, or 1 year after that.

I know it is rediculous to spend that much time waiting for a service.

Yep and if there were a few tiny shavings the filter would catch it or it would settle out to the bottom.

The higher metal element content that should come down and level off once the engine is broken in and it's had a couple oil changes.

I think the real thing to think about is do you want to actually do 10,000 mile oil changes or does some of your driving meet severe service as stated in the owners manual. I know I make some trips that are under 5-6 miles often and I tow a small trailer occasionally. My last vehicle was changed about every 6000 miles and that seemed like it was good. So I'm going to stay with doing it at 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

    from another camp

the oil many turn in IS Recycled.................simply filtered down more than the filters U can buy

additives removed & graded as a stock to go out on the shelf again

many are in favor of extended changes not into the zip code

of taxi cab......hi idle......bump/grind commuter type environs

most of my driving is legal speeds hiway

i simply change the filters ............................at intervals

    most would change oil& filter

then change the oil 2x sometime 3 x

    no engine issues

    it mightbe noteworthy

12-16 litre diesel engines favor the extended changes.............some recommended by

the manufacturer 30k with engines warranteed 750000 many going 1.2 to 2 million to rebuild

    few engines tax oil severely

Forget the owner's manual and maintenance guide. Change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and use premium gas at every fill-up.
