This is such a subjective question. Does high mileage automatically make it "the best"? Or is it capability, comfort, size, color, options..etc. Buy what you like and drive it. Enough said.

My Government truck was a 09 Tacoma. Because of that truck and its utter reliability and power (had a manual too) I purchased a used 2011. The Big V6 with auto is a huge benefit to me. I drive old Military trucks usually and something with real power is a big plus for me.

    Stock for now.. maybe
I say 1st gen. I have a 1995 4cl 2wd auto and a 2015 v6 4wd manual. I like them both but I think the 95 might outlast the 2015 who knows. The metal is only getting thinner as the trucks get newer and more plastic.

I feelsafer driving the 2015 though. More airbag protection and such. I like the smaller size/footprint of the 1st gens and they just feel sturdier (closing doors and hood and tailgate).

The paint is shit on both. I guess we'll see what the 2015 looks like in 20 years (magnetic grey). The red 95 is oxidized badly and clear coat flaking off on most panels.

I couldn't bare to get rid of the 95 after getting the 2015 a few years ago. I'd rather lend it to a friend or family member than sell it
Again, I love both and will keep both

Edit- I almost bought a 1985 Toyota pickup last summer only because it was in ok shape and they never come up for sale. I didn't need it more of a trail toy. I didn't bring money with me on purpose. We settled on a price and was going to come back with a trailer in a few days. He decided not to sell the next day. Oh well lol

I'll just take a cop out and say they're all good, and all have their merits. I'd love to own a first gen but finding anything not destroyed or hacked up in my area is impossible. I love my third gen, heavily considered a second gen because I know they're all good.

To my wife’s chagrin, I still have all the Toyota trucks I’ve ever owned. The 85 and 99 are 2wd. My new one is a OR MT. I love them all but 3rd gen is nicer, more comfortable and more powerful. The jury is out on most dependable.

I had a 94 P/U. 22re. 5 speed, locking hubs and a j-case. It was a great truck but not very comfortable for long periods. Regret selling that one.

I had a 99 SR5 2.7l with and auto and j-case. Much more comfortable than the 94 and just as reliable.

My 2016 TRD OR is probably my favorite. Its very comfortable on long trips, very capable off road and still gets 17mpg with 33's and shit hanging off of it everywhere. I also enjoy all the "electronic wizardry".

There all great trucks and last a long time if maintained.

    Generally speaking, for me.....

Rust free, well maintained, does what I need it to with minimal modification, payment free. Simple is better.

I shopped for a 1st gen access cab. Liked the exterior look and scale of the truck. Could not find what I wanted locally.

Bought a '13 access cab, glad I did. 5 lug. Better seats/ride than a 6 lug, low cost, does everything I need and a bit more. And I still don't cotton to the 3rd gen style, wizardry or the jumbo grill.

With 35k on it, I expect it to be around a while. Unless I get pegged by a tourist, texter or drunk.

Or if a grandson cons me in a few years.
