This time last year, you could order a 17. I suspect something has them delayed... Either a major change or a problem.

It's only July 20. When I bought my Tundra back in '11 I remember that the 12s were just barely starting to show up and it was mid-October. They had lots of 11s and only one or two 12s. No difference between the two model years that I recall, either. I got the '11 because they gave me a better deal. I'm going to bet that by fall (which doesn't start until late September, two months from now) they'll be starting to show up on dealer lots.

Does not even sound like they converted the Factories over yet, seems like they are gonna be late arrivers.

Can you provide proof aside from just yelling WRONG? I had to wait over a month for my truck and it wasn't even custom built. Go look on this forum when the 16's first came out and see how long some people waited for their custom build. There's a difference in allocation versus ordering one directly from the factory.

Lol...too many to quote on mobile but you cannot custom order a Toyota. They make what they want, end of story. When you "order" a truck you are only getting in line for the next one like that the dealer can get their hands on. You can however request options be added or removed from a truck that is already slated to be built but has yet to be assembled. This would include things like the premium and tech package but you cannot request an SR5 be changed to a TRD.

You are definitely mistaken. You can literally sit down with a sales rep and hand pick all the options you want on your truck. For example if you want a tonneau cover or not, or if you want side step rails or not, or if you want mud flaps or not. then it builds directly to your specs and ships out in 5-7 weeks give or take.

Wrong. See post above. Toyota does not "build to order"

If you could truly order, then the moonroof would be an orderable option for the SR5.

Toyota creates packages and produces what they want. When you order, you are picking a SKU Toyota already planned. The more unusual SKU's take longer.

Ok, so you mean it's like meeting with the real estate developer to design your track home before it's built and getting to choose the color of the interior you want. The house was already slated to be built in on that lot, you're just choosing some of the interior/exterior options you want it to have. I guess in that way, you're right.

Kind of but even less so. They normally wait for a buyer before they build those houses even despite the buyer having limited options. Toyota doesn't care if anyone is going to buy it or not. They are building what they want 24/7 and never get or look at "build orders." The most they see are requests to alter pre-existing builds that will happen regardless if anyone has "placed an order" for one.

I built to spec every option at the dealer and waited 5 weeks for it to build then an additional 2 weeks to ship. You're correct, it was only the options I was able to pick, I couldn't change an SR5 to a TRD Sport.... but they take the TRD Sport and you can pick every option you want on it

And to chime in on the "Ordered" units. If its a retail deal, you are not factory ordering. What happens on a RETAIL order is you put the specs you want and the dealer finds a unit that was ordered as a dealer stock unit with your specs and they tag that order for you and get the unit rerouted to their dealership if its already built or if its still in production, get it reassigned over to their dealership, or essentially an allocation. If the unit is not in production yet, they are able to change certain options like running boards, floor mats, etc but major packages require locating another dealer ordered unit.

The ONLY way to FACTORY ORDER (build to order) a vehicle directly from the factory as a fresh order is to order the vehicle FLEET (how I order my vehicles). Fleet orders you can order whatever you want as long as you are within their ordering time frame.

You can request option changes. They were going to build your TRD Sport with or without you asking for it though. I admit at the end of the day it's not far off custom ordering. You can get what you want if you wait. It's just not the same under the hood. Other companies do actually "build to order". Toyota does not.

Another way to look at it is the challenge I faced. I wanted a silver 4x4 OR DCSB with the non JBL tech package and tow only. In my region that simply doesn't exist on dealer lots and it would have taken months to get, if ever. Primary reason is that Gulf States Region doesn't use their precious allocations for trucks configured like that. They add the tonneau cover, side steps, etc. to all of the trucks and Toyota is gonna build what GST wants, not you or I.

I would have to fly to Denver to get the config I wanted already on the ground.

So I caved on ordering and decided to grab a unit off the lot here in Texas. Got a better deal that way too.

I also changed my mind on getting silver yet again. Decided to go bold.

Got it, understand what you are saying now and you're correct. They had the sport already ready for that dealership to be built. It was actually a different color, they let me change the color to mgm and all my options.

Yep, the 18's will start hitting lots around September. I ordered my 17 at the actual dealer, the website isn't really ordering, in early June 2016....delivered mid September.

GST and SET are a whole different ball game. They operate outside of Toyota USA and do their own shit for the most part. They are absolute garbage if you ask me. I went out of state to get away from them.

SET and GST are just distributors for Toyota thus why there are the added fees because its Toyota to distributor to consumer where as on the west coast, its Toyota directly to the consumer.

Same issue I ran into in the Dallas area (GST). I wanted a TRD Sport 4x4 long bed with the tech and tow package.......long blank stare from the fleet guy before he said "so what you want is a purple unicorn"? He ordered it (approved through GST) for me and it took 5 months to get it!!
