Can a dealer tell when a vehicle will arrive once it’s in the pipeline? I ordered a 2020 Limited a month ago. Told me around Sept. 12. Last week told me maybe 9/9 or 9/10. It won’t be here tomorrow. Then told me that removing the tonneau messed up the order (although the sales manager told me they add the tonneau at the dealer level). The sales guy was to call me last week but never did. Got a text this afternoon that he’d call me Friday and let me know what he knows. I told him I’d drop by Friday morning. I know a Corvette has stages where you can look and see where your car is in the pipeline.

    TIA

Sounds like a bunch of buffoons. Time to get another dealer.

I had a Ford dealer pull this on me when I ordered a Mustang. Planned a while vacation trip around my new car's arrival date only to get screwed. Ended up going to another dealer, buying the car, and taking my new car to the first dealer to get my deposit refunded. The first dealer tried hard to convince me to wait "just another week since it was on its way".

Tonneau is not added at the dealer, it’s a factory only option, sounds like there was an issue when the dealer tried to change specs for the existing allocation. 2021s will be here end of month, first week of October, sounds like it’ll either be here in next few weeks or as a 2021.

The sales manager told me they added it at the dealer level. Just going by what he said. Would they switch me to a 2021?

Ya not how it works, they simply did a request to have an existing allocation’s specs changed at the factory to have it. Good question wouldn’t hurt to ask but sounds like you should find a new dealer.

Commence the discusion about 'order' vs 'allocated'.

I suspect what you'll hear is that the manufacturing process doesn't have a good way to see when you'll get your truck. Also, the dealer can only guess bit will gladly take a deposit and string you along to lock you in with them.

I believe you will find discussions about 'toyota dealer allocation' and maybe see how they apply to your situation (or maybe they don't)

Depends on where he is. If southeast or southwest, they add "Toyota" covers at the port.

True unless, which I assumed, it’s the genuine oem cover. Otherwise yep SET does port aftermarket ones.

Ok I took a trip to the dealer this morning. I have several friends in upper management there but I let the sales manager tell me and show me where my truck is. The system he showed me said it was 8 days out. Of course he gave a disclaimer that anything could happen. So I went to one of my friends and they went and had a talk with the SM and came back and said that seemed correct and that she would track it for me. I told her if it takes much longer I’d probably let them have my deposit and do something different. She understood and said it should be ok.

    1) actual delivery from Toyota is not in the control of any dealer

    2) there 'may' be some delivery control if it's just being moved from another dealer

    3) there really is no ordering as there was in days of yore, like when you could get an RS/SS Camaro, a radio delete GTO, etc etc. You just pick stuff out of the book and they try to find something close. What you wind up with may be exact. It may not be exact (with more or less). If less, it may be brought up to exact with dealer add on.

    4) the closest you'll come with any kind of speed is if it's sitting on the lot already, or if it's sitting on the lot of another dealer they can work out a swap with.

Hoping you get exactly what you want..................

You can order what you want from other manufacturers, just not Toyota

Dealers can track any vehicle they have incoming....or have the VIN for...through their system. While they are given a range of time for final delivery, they can track the process daily if they want and they generally know about how long it takes to get to the dealership from the Port.

My dealership sent me a screenshot several times on my truck and it arrived at the dealership on the day they predicted it would. Based on my dealer's location and what work was to be done on my truck at the port they predicted it would be at their dealership on February 3rd - it arrived that evening. Of course, there may be delays along the way but the system updates allow them to see any changes in the arrival timeline.

Went to the dealership. A guy (manager was gone) showed me a screen with a bunch of vehicles listed and showed me the one with my name on it. It showed an VIN but when I asked him if that was MY VIN he said it could be a temporary VIN. One column was called “Days on Lot”. It showed 8. He said that didn’t mean it was at the dealership for 8 days but that it would be 8 days before it arrived. I’m not ot 100% confident. I found my friend who runs all the finance/accounting at the dealership and she looked into it and said she was going to track it for me. I told her if it didn’t arrive soon I may give them my deposit and go elsewhere. We shall see.....

I just had my dealer order a 2021 TRD Off-Road MT in Voodoo Blue since no one around has a 2020 Voodoo Blue MT (I have had several dealers look). I did the toyota.com Tacoma build, printed it off, and gave it to him to order. He said 'maybe' beginning of December but not guaranteed. Dealer didn't take a deposit as they felt bad for not finding a 2020 MT in Voodoo Blue but said they will keep looking. I'll be trading in my 2019 TRD Sport Super White MT. Seems like the Voodoo Blue MT are rare! I'm hoping they can 'track' it in a few weeks so I can at least get an idea when it will arrive.

I just sold my 2019 Sport to Carvana and ordered a 2021 Sport and I was told 8-10 weeks, but in the end those are just estimates and could be earlier or later.

Good luck to you. My truck was supposed to arrive late August, and still hasn't shown up.
Dealer says they have no info other than "it could be any day"...
So, I talked them into giving me a courtesy loaner until the truck shows up.

My truck was a dealer swap but it had not arrived at the original dealership when they arranged the swap. I was given a time window of about a week when it would arrive at the original dealership and then a day to move it to my selling dealer. It showed up early in the week.
Then mine was already produced when we found it. It still couldn't be redirected to a different dealership.

Sounds like more BS from the dealer or someone who doesn't know the system. The vehicle is assigned a pre-VIN when the actual production is scheduled. At that point, it can be found on the Toyota VIN look-up site where it will reflect the scheduled configuration with options. Once the vehicle is produced, the pre-VIN disappears from the system and the actual VIN is assigned. If the truck has been produced, it has a VIN, not a pre-VIN.
