Put it in s5 everytime you drive it. Mine drives completely different that way. You are just limiting the highest gear it can shift to. This eliminates 6th gear. Try it 1 week, report back.

    And welcome to TW!

your truck isn't going to learn anything in my experience with my 2018, i almost feel like mine has gotten worse. i went to my local dealer for the transmission TSB and they were as helpful as a sack of rotten old shit. hoping sooner than later (maybe already) that the TSB will apply to the 2018's.... get it together toyota! my old chevy s10 shifted better and so did my jeep on 35's with no computer tampering..

Try bumping it in to s mode. It defaults to s4, then bump it up to get 5th and/or 6th back. Then let it shift, it’s different than regular drive. I’ll lock out 6th if not going above 72mph or on a super flat road where it can actually hold 6th (been rare for me).

ok, I dont really understand your post..the point of it. Either you are implying I was stupid that I didnt do an "extended" test drive and was caught completely off guard that were certain aspects of the truck that completely suck... or is it the notion that I should STFU and love it or leave it.

It's safe to say that people dont buy a tacoma because of driver comfort. I bought the tacoma because 1. reliability 2. ability to haul gear and race bikes 3. ability to park in the city 4. get better than 13 mpg combined. If there was a light truck that ticked those off equally well I would have bought it.

    anyways. troll alert

Like others have said, can’t you just use your “manual” gears instead of “D”?

I’ve played and driven with my Tacoma (as well as many other brands) that at a certain speed and torque, combined with going uphill, will downshift at a certain pedal distance. To prevent it from downshifting, I ease off of the gas a little bit. It’s something you have to “feel” for.

Everybody knows how to push down a gas pedal but knowing how to control it and what it will do in different scenarios is a little different.

yeah I get that, it's just not linear at all. my lexus is drive by wire and it's nothing like the taco. I was just curious if it would get better and it sounds like the answer is no. so perhaps OV tune is the way. need to look st some.dyno results.

I'd like a dollar for every time the word 'linear' has been used on TacomaWorld in association with the 3rd gen Tacoma transmission... and a ride to the closest strip club.

It's worth in a thread about my driveline issues.. $0.00.

Glad it's working for you, I think I'm in a different boat however. Coming from the tundra the current situation needs to be changed (for me).

    My 2-cents...
Mine was similar, and I got used to it. Used S5, or ECT when it mattered and got used to just handling the pedal differently. And once I did I was OK with it, it wasn't awesome but I could live with it (especially since I really do love the truck).
Then I got the OVTune, which was a game-changer. I now enjoy driving it as much as I liked my Hemi GC. And no, it's not as fast as my Hemi GC was, but the driving experience is almost as fun ;-)
    YMMV.

My 04 Scion XB did the same gear hunt, so the tranny in my 16 TRD doesn’t bother me. I really like this truck.

Just out of curiosity, does the OVTune affect mileage?

From what I have read it doesnt really affect it at all. Obviously if your mashing your getting less mpg, quite a few people have said that they get better MPG.

Honestly, I keep hearing how happy everyone has been with the OV tune I think it's time to just suck it up and buy it. More power, better shifting, better throttle response.. for $700... that's pretty damn cheap.

Lost my shirt trading off my 2016 auto based on the way it shifted and gear hunted, said i would never buy a third gen again. Here I am. Found a nice manual on the used lot, Love it all over again , the third gen is a nicer truck for sure , as much as I loved my second gen. There is something strangely satisfying about rowing through those gears , mind you I live in the middle of nowhere so rush hour does not exist ....

Shoot, learnin? LEARNIN? Got's me the same problem! I think my Tacoma might be deaf, dumb or stupid...

I keep saying "whoa..." and it doesn't stop on it's own. I have to use that darn break pedal thingy.
I keep saying "here" and it doesn't come on it's own. I gotta drive it from place to place...
I keep saying "come around" and he don't he even turn on his own. Gotta make him turn using the circular reigns...

I'm tellin ya, my Tacoma don't mind fer nuttin!

I've tried treats (apples, sugar cubes, hay, etc...), I've tried a check cord (just drug the shit out of me for several miles), and I've tried beaten it with a stick... (doesn't seem to care one way or another). Heck, I've even tried pairin him up with another Tacoma back a the stall... (doesn't see to care about "that" either? Maybe he's...? I dunno?).

    I plumb dunn outta ideas?
