So we have plenty of members here with 300-500k on the truck. 200k seems not a big deal at all.

Question for you guys, at what point will you give up your first gen?

Will certain mileage make you give it up?

It being certain years old make you give it up?

Will certain amount of $$$ repair make you give it up?

Or are you taking it to your grave?

Or are you saving money for a newer gen ?

I am 3100 miles from 200k on mine. I live in rust free area so no issue with frame etc. as long as my motor and tranny holds my baby is staying and I am not giving it up.

When the engine falls out or the frame splits into two from rust (Which will probably never happen since I live in California, lol.)

And I only have 80,000 on my odo, so it still has lots of life left in it.

I just shipped my truck to Poland and when I remove it from the shipping container (next week) I will pretend it is brand new car, so after next 20 years or after next 300k miles whichever come last.

If rust ever starts to get ahead of me I will, but I am keeping the upper hand so far. I plan on having the the motor rebuilt should it finally fail. but no sign of that yet.

Never! I bought mine planning on keeping it until it dies and just having it as a beater when i eventually get a newer truck. I have a feeling when i do get a new truck the old one will be worth more to me than anyone will pay for it

Don't think I've ever met someone who lived in California that moved to Poland. Huh.
On the bright side, your frame should be good since it was a California truck.

Me either :) Everybody thinks I'm some kind of Polanski who runs away from a law
On the other hand I think I am the only one who will be driving 5th gen 4Runner and 1st gen Tacoma here. Both frames are in like new condition, so far.

Must be nice to not being charged an arm, a leg, and a transmission rebuild to live there. Cost of living here is helllaaaa high. Met a bunch of people who are moving out of the state because the increasing rent prices are pushing everyone out.

Last time I checked, San Francisco and San Jose are the most expensive cities to live in North America, in that order. Los Angeles isn't that far off.

I'll give my first gen up when someone offers me a sweet wad of cash. I look at it like, everything in my possession is for sale for the right price. lol

Prepare yourself, if that's the case as you state, you'll be keeping that truck for another 10+ years. 400k+ miles will be the routine norm on these engines and transmissions. Hell, a lot of them get to 300k with poor maintenance. Toyota's amazing engines and transmissions, unfortunately, hide the lack of or poor maintenance very well.

    2.7L auto
I have known owner since new
Oil changes were done every 30-40k miles
    Not a single other maintenance

My goal is to get to 350k with mine

With 138k miles on the odometer, it might be stretch before I let go. Besides, I haven't dumped a ton of cash into it yet. If I sold it before then, I'd miss out on taking a huge loss on all the upgrades.

Edit: I ran into a guy earlier this with a nearly identical truck as mine with fewer miles. He drove to Santa Cruz (about 150 mi) to get it, and paid $18k.

This tells me two things: A) These first gens are desirable; and 2) There's always a Tacoma nutter out there willing to give you top dollar.

    I would seriously consider $18k.

You'll get there no problemo, if you keep it long enough. The truck will get there, the question is just who'll own it when it does. ;)

Anytime. I am going to add a three wheeler morgan or a Ariel atom this year, so one of the Lotus might have to go due to space.

    BACK to 1st gen :)

This makes me not feel so bad about being 1000 mi overdue for an oil change.
