All details have sources. Don't take the overused scapegoat that wikidpedia isn't reliable. A hell of a lot of the information on wikipedia is true and useful. If you have contradictory information, be my guest.

No they don't deserve 100 an hour but they also don't deserve ten which is what most people start at at these plants. The most I have heard people starting off at non union plants is in SC BMW facility, they start those guys off at a whopping $13 an hour. You cannot make it off of 13 an hour by yourself and accumulate anything of worth.

I would also like to add the 2% cola raises they so happily bestow on their employees is a sure way to insure that their employees will infact make less money the longer they work there. Just do some NPV equations if you don't believe me. States like Texas, Alabama, SC, NC, aka right to work states have done more to set the middle class back than anything that a union has done. Why do you think Japanese companies are building vehicles here in the south? Because it is fucking cheaper than it is in Japan. There are no unions like ours in Japan, just fair wages, there is only about three unions that control everything but they do not have the same abilities. Give it time, all production will end up in India when their technology and infrastructure can support it.

My wife works at BMW in Spartansburg, she started at 13$ per hour 5 years ago after about 9 months or maybe a year she recieved a bump to 15$ per hour. Without fail she gets a raise every year and now is at 19$ and some change per hour. To me for the job she is expected to perform (basic assembly) that is pretty fair, even generous for someone with only a high school diploma and minimal job experience. The promotion scale is a damn sight better than at the company I work for as an EE with nearly 20 years of experience in my field. I am greatful to live in a right to work state if it were to change I would move.

I guess earning a fair wage in keeping with the rest of the world is not in your plans. I commend you for your loyalty to your state.

A fair wage is a very relitive, if I was content driving a inexpensive car living in a area where housing costs are below 100k and my only ambition is to get by I could live quite comfortably on my wifes pay alone.
If you are refering to NY, IL, MI, CA, WI, Europe, Japan or Canada the rest of the world my wifes paygrade is a deficiant wage. If you are refering to China, India, most of South and Central America, Africa or the far East my wifes paygrade would make her quite wealthy. My loyalty is to the free market society alone and I will go where ever I can negotiate the best pay for the services I can provide. If can cannot earn what I need to live at the level I am currently at I will re-evaluate, educate and find a new career that will pay me what I need. I will not rely on some orginization to force someone else to pay me more than I am worth.

Well I agree with you on most aspects, I do see a place where unions play an important role. Most of the places that she has a superior pay scale are places that do not have running water, sewage, or a decent education system, ie not places I would like to compare myself to. In these times of corporate power grabbing and bottom dollar economics as purveyed by the Kochs of the world, the working class needs someone to help their voice be heard. The fact of the matter is that unions are made up of the people they represent, its power through numbers and not dollars. Free market society will fail if there is no money for the masses to buy goods with, look at our current economy, it is that simple. No need to cater to a plutocracy that feels no loyalty to the people that feed it if you want free market capitalism. Enough thread jacking from me.

Who ever said a car assembly job should be a career position?! If you want to make six figures a year, go get an education and make a difference in the world. No one deserves six figures for a programmed position that requires little to no brain power. If the non-union plants reward you for loyalty and dedication by providing monetary reviews on a very regular basis, that's great. But if you want to go help BMW or Toyota build cars, don't expect to be living in the same neighborhood as your white collar neighbors. There's no reason you should.

I never have and never will understand this line of reasoning. For one, why should anyone feel the people of Vietnam, Mexico, India, China or any other third world developing country deserve to earn wages on par with that of those paid in the USA? Second, the overall sense of entitlement felt by a large part of Americans...$13 an hour starting in places like Alabama and Mississippi might are very competitive wages for Blue collar America; especially those with only a High School Education is perplexing at best. It's sad when the Big-3 cannot build a car right here in the Home Country but the imports can. Why is that? Could it be because of the bloated Union contracts that the Big-3 are forced to pay? Let's not mention that the US has one of the highest corporate Tax rates in the Western World, but steering away from politics, all this talk and backlash that the execs are overpaid for the Big-3...sure I can buy that. Don't like it, buy stock at pennies to the Dollar for GM and vote the CEO and Board of regents out with your shareholder vote. Moving on, I don't think anyone here will say that the Toyota Tacoma is underpriced, now if it was everyone feels that the average worker in Mexico should earn Modern Western country wages on par to the US, what would that do to prices for us Joe the Consumer? Looking at the dilema through another microscope, if it wasn't for the migrant worker coming from Mexico getting paid 25 cents/hr, what would it cost for fruits and vegetables in this country? Sucks...but it's a reality of life. Forcing an artificial wage hike to satisfy the moral obligation of our societies bleeding heart idealogues would do nothing but create inflation in the developing Third World and prices that the American Consumer could no longer afford to pay. Sorry but our $30K Tacoma will cost more around $40K. The days of China's cheap labor are coming to an end especially when their workforce expects cars, homes, big screen TV's, Cell Phones and the wages needed to support the American Dream lifestyle they have now tasted the past 15 years. Sorry, but I wholeheartedly support the idea of free markets. Don't like your situation? Better yourself and work your way up the food chain. Don't care for the wage you earn? Quit your job. It's amazing what the power of self worth and empowerment has.....that is more power than any union can match. The market will pay a salary necessary to meet the demand. It's always worked that way, history has proven such; that is until we implement artificial market conditions with regulations and where Labor Unions regulate wages. Industrial Labor unions have long outlived their usefulness.

With that in mind, my truck was built at the NUMMI plant in Freemont Ca.

In less than three semesters I will have an MBA from Wake Forest University. Already graduated from a nice local private college in the top 5% of my class with a BS in Business Management. So don't tell me to go better myself, been there done that got the class ring and T Shirt to prove it.

That is cool yall, keep feeding the aristocrats of this country and see where it will get us. If the people in the working class and lower (75% of the country fit in this category) do not have excess income to spend on useless shit the whole infrastructure of our economic system will fail. The strength of this country's economy is based on the prosperity of the middle class and lower, not the upper class. It would be one thing if everyone was hurting in this economy, but the fact of the matter is that the wealthy are growing their wealth at rates never seen in history. They continue to horde money and focus on that bottom dollar. Sure go invest in stocks, if it were that easy everyone would do it, too bad most of the shares are usually owned by the BOD and their staff and they aren't giving up that leverage for anything.

I am actually getting away from the life of consumerism. There are a few changes I need to make on my truck and past that and the occasional rifle/pistol purchase and my mortgage I see no need to constantly waste money on the latest and greatest thing.

The whole reason why I am getting my MBA is to make changes from the inside. There is no reason why a business can't make a profit while paying fair wages, millions of them do. I am not saying we should pay people six figures for installing glove boxes, those examples are rare. I am saying mechanics that do metal/composite work on aircraft deserve more than $9 an hour, which is a common occurrence around here, I know because I was one of those mechanics. Examples like Patagonia, Google, Microsoft, Herman Miller, Timberland, Nike, Duke Power, Southwest Airlines, Intratech, even Ford (as of lately) spit in the face of the people who think pandering to the elite is good economic practice.

My political affiliation used to be conservative, but all conservatives have become are the house slaves for the corporate hierarchy. Worried about other people's money that they will never have. I believe I am still more conservative than those house slaves though, "gotta do fo massa so he giz us more chitlins to eat on."

Good for you, at least your working your way up the ladder. I do find it highly ironic you are spending your hard earned dollar to pursue an advanced degree that highlights nothing more than how to better maximize profit corporately. Do what you must, but those aristocrats you blame for the woes of the world made it through the means provided them; hate the successful....it's the Human Way. You are right by limiting your consumeralism, you are doing your part; albeit small part in fighting the system you find unjust. Karl Marx wrote a book about the plight of the Proletariat vs the cruel Bourgeoisie; his teachings have produced very limited success. Good luck in your quest...

This is a typical ignorant response to my viewpoint. Because I don't want to support the aristocracy, I must be a communist. They have you so brainwashed and it is understandable, before my education I was brainwashed the same way. In fact my beliefs will save capitalism because if it keeps going in its current direction it will capitulate on itself from being too top heavy. When things become haves and have nots, capitalism will be over and the government will have to support the population, no choice in the matter, and if you think they control us now, just wait. The same weakness that befell communism are the same weaknesses in capitalism, greed. I have no problem with people having more money than me, but the ones getting rich at the expense of my tax dollars then bitching about how bad you have it and how hard it is to make money, yet the people you make money off of are supposed to go without because you want to keep going to Tahiti every year? those people get a big fuck you. Give me a mid six figure salary every year and I will gladly pay 50% of it in taxes. I am sure anyone who will never be privileged enough to have a chance to make that kind of money would.
