I've been looking around for something like this and I'm surprised that there really isn't anything. Some of the newer wranglers have an interesting system that looks like an alternator running off a serpentine belt. It's not super powerful but it's something. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

    Interesting idea.
Their implementation looks like a bit of an afterthought though. Its not really suitable to attach something like that to the fan belt. That belt wouldn't be good for transferring so much torque back to the engine that it would actually make much of a difference. I would think no more than about 3-4 hp maximum. If you wanted something that would really make a difference, then it would be better to attach it directly, or at least with a more substantial belt than that.

I also looked up for some writeups on it. They're describing it as BROADENING the torque curve, rather than adding to it. Does Fiat not have VVT?

so by running the alternator as an electric motor, the system essentially eliminates the parasitic draw of the accessories run off the serpentine belt. I'm guessing any additional work the electric motor could do is limited to the opposite of the load of the accessories on the belt. It is pretty clever, especially if a supercharger was tied into the mix too.
