ive heard a lot about the 3rd gen 3.5l being a all new motor, and also heard the opposite... that the motor came from the Lexus line. What's up with our motors? Does it come from Lexus? If so what vehicles hold the same motor?

OP - I've heard experts refer to the Tacoma engine as an Atkinson-type engine. I'm not clear on the fine details that go into what constitutes Atkinson vs. Atkinson-type engines but someone on TW will know.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_GR_engine

According to Wikipedia the 3rd gen is equipped with the 2GR-FKS. ^This link shows which vehicles have the same engine.

Toyota uses variable valve timing to accomplish an effective "Atkinson" cycle design. When the driving conditions permit, the intake valves are kept open longer into the compression stroke, forcing a small part of the air/fuel charge back into the intake manifold, effectively reducing "pumping losses" on the cylinder that is on its intake stroke at that time.

If that could be combined with Dodge's MSD then you could have virtually 0hp while driving.

Interesting, so all and all it should be extremely reliable.

I wonder if it's a nightmare to adjust the timing on these engines?

I'm sure Toyota has plans for that, also looking at the other cars with the same motor as ours... reliability rating are high and complaints are low. Among the best. Now we just need to get an idea if our transmission is linked to anything else or if it's entirely new

Amazing to think that Atkinson cycle engines have been around since the 1890's.

It reminds me of the show "Chasing classic cars" where Wayne Carini talked about the first hybrid technology car from the 1890's.

actual atkinson is simply that an atkinson.

The one in our trucks is an otto cycle that just keeps valves open longer during light loading on the compression stroke, reducing drag making it more efficient...so they claim.

Its a reliable engine and solid platform, whether its the right engine for our trucks, thats where everyone gets their feathers ruffled. I have no issues, its a tacoma, not a tundra, I don't tow with it or haul huge ass loads besides my dirt bikes. Works for me and I'm guessing about 90% of all other 3rd gen owners. People need reasons to b*tch.

Lexus is Toyota, Toyota is Lexus.

Why would you ever need to "adjust timing" on a modern engine? And how would you? The days of distributors and timing lights are long gone...

I would say Lexus is Toyota, but Toyota is not Lexus. Lexus is the luxury line of Toyota.

And I believe he's talking about setting the valve timing. You still have to set the timing of the cams with a chain or belt(not sure what the 3.5 uses). You're thinking of adjusting spark timing which even today is still set at a certain point via the crankshaft. The ECU just adjusts it based on load.
