a week ago my truck started vibrating at 60 and higher, took it to dealer, I have an extended warranty. They told me rotors were warped replacing would fix. 400 later and same problem, Mis-diagnosed.
So I come how and find my daughter coloring on the driveway and she was some sort of weight in her hand. Looks like a wheel type weight that welds on.
Anyone have an idea where it may have come from, think it may be my culprit?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1376048394.452354.jpg

Any front end vibration problems start with wheel balance first, then go to alignment then whatever else is left. I've never heard of warped rotors causing vibration issues except when braking.

I agree it looks like a driveshaft weight. Slide under and look to see

Should mention that I did have the all the wheels balanced, No difference. My driveshaft was also replaced under TSB and my warranty about three weeks ago. But I will definitely have a look to see if there is a weight missing from any place that was not replaced

i'm going to chime in because that looks like the weight i lost and it definitely looks like (at least on my truck) that it came from the driveshaft. i think i still have it in my garage, what do you do when a weight falls off of your driveshaft? how are they attached at the factory?

Thanks everyone for your quick feedback, I have sent the pictures also to my rep at the dealership I also mentioned all of your comments about the driveshaft let's hope they will do something about the 400 bucks they made me spend uselessly

Drum was my first thought also, but I am feeling the vibration in the steering wheel and see shake in the steering wheel also

If I double posted sorry, my posts aren't showing up. Go look on the outside of the drum.

It looks like a brake drum weight, but I wouldn't think you'd feel it in the steering wheel. A drive shaft out of balance I'm not sure if it would feel front specific either though.

It is definitely not front specific because if I put my hand on the passenger seat I can feel the vibration big time in the seat and under my own ass. But I do feel and see the steering wheel shake at and above 60

I was thinking the same thing Max! It looks like a balancing weight for a brake drum. The curved shape makes me think that it is not a driveshaft weight (But I could be wrong). Most driveshaft weights I have seen were arced rather than curved. A curved weight would be appropriate for a drum balance weight.

Imbalances in the wheel/tire/brake systems usually are most pronounced at 55MPH-65MPH.

This is NOT a Tacoma drum, but shows where weights for a drum can typically be located.

Ok so now that I know what it is, can this thing be tack welded back on. Or should I be looking to replace the whole drum?

I wouldn't try welding it back on. The heat can and probably would warp the drum. Have the dealership replace your rotor(s) from the miss diagnosis from the vibes.

I'd get a new drum, I think you'd have a problem with balance again if you ground down the rust to good metal, and if you put a bit too much weld rod tacking it back on. Less of an ass ache to get the new drum.

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
The dealership owes you $400 of parts and labor they talked you into wasting. They should go ahead in install new drums for you, free.
