I hit carnigie SRVA today..I was surprised how small the 4x4 area was. Still had a lot of fun.

This was the first time I have ever off roaded. The Tacoma seems to perform really well. I had no problem going up the steep hills in 4 Lo.

It was really fun to take off traction control and drive around in 2wd and slide everywhere

Great looking trucks! Love those wheels - especially the one's on the 2nd gen - what are those? Are those 16" rims and 33" tires?

Quick question to the more experienced guys here. I used to track race and auto-x a lot, but I feel off-roading' is more fun. I want to do this more often. Is there a way I can off-road and just upgrade the shocks and tires? I don't want to lift my car more than the stock height.

We just got back from a week in the Rio Grande National Forest. The trip wasn't off-roading focused, mostly hiking and fly fishing, but we had some fun on all the old logging roads and unmaintained forestry service roads.
I am in a bone stock 2017 SR5 4X4, so I didn't push it too far. I did ding the flimsy skid plate from a high rock, but other than that the truck handled everything BEAUTIFULLY. There were only a few roads I couldn't ride, mostly either too narrow from lack of use (I'm not looking for pin stripes or busted windows), or they had rocks I couldn't clear. The good thing is that my wife liked it so much better than putting all those miles on a 4-wheeler that I won't get any grief from her when it is time to do a lift :)

I would not recommend lifting your car either. If you mean your truck, then yeah... you can off-road at stock height. You may not be able to go where more lifted trucks can, but getting better tires will help quite a bit. Hold off on upgrading your shocks for now though... after a few trail runs, you may change your mind and want a lift. And down the rabbit hole you'll go (with the rest of us).
If you're just starting out with off-roading, I'd recommend not going alone. And invest in some recovery gear. Good luck!

Are you running modified suspension or bigger tires? We were out in Moab and avoided Fins 'n Things because we thought the stock height wouldn't cut it. How did the truck fare?

I did fins while stock, you'll be fine but you'll scrape a lot.

Took off to north GA to mark waypoints and routes for future camping, hiking , fishing spots, waterfalls (wife request) and all other types of shenanigans.
