Currently out on the Mojave Road in CA with our Tacoma. This trip is with my good friend and our sons. I spent 6 months researching a Tacoma on TW, purchased in Mid-Feb, and now it’s finally the first day of camping and off roading with my son. Found a great camp spot next to Balancing Rock, and there’s even just enough signal to get this out :)290D6A25-D839-42C5-B372-685396B6E6BE.jpg AA10DEE7-1EBE-4D76-BB68-7AB70EA01BAC.jpg E87E18C8-47E8-41D7-A36A-493B05FD8C11.jpg A96ECFCD-5CC8-4040-B008-E111697EAAA8.jpg 8D286607-2FB0-48C2-AC34-266BF9E76079.jpg

My son and I got back last night after completing the Mojave Road in Southern California. It’s a 7 hour drive one way from where I am in Northern California just to get there. The road is 150 miles of history, different desert terrains, campy stops (the old school bus is GONE btw), water crossings, lava tubes, old forts, caves, fast Baja style sandy sections, and amazing sights. We did the trip over 4 days and 3 nights, our first big trip. Simply awesome. Get out and explore!

Afton Canyon, looks like a mini Grand Canyon except you can drive through it. The river is just a stream at this point and we were hauling back and forth through it with water splashing up everywhere. Most fun I’ve had since my Big Wheel as a kid

Speaking of water crossings, no pics but I actually needed 4wd today on a paved county road this morning, and I live in coastal California where there’s no snow :) I took a little drive up to a small-town bakery about 10 miles outside Santa Cruz. Took a little detour through the village, saw a big puddle covering the road but didn’t think much of it (it’s been raining the last 36 hours or so). I hit the puddle at about 10 mph, and BOOM, the truck crashed down into something and simultaneously the windshield was inundated with water. While I grabbed for the wiper stalk, I let the truck stop. Took 4wd and a few minutes of rocking back and forth to get out. It was pretty deep, though to be honest I didn’t need low range, crawl control etc. In hindsight, I should have noticed all the runoff from the adjacent field flowing into the road, but this was right on the coast, not in the mountains where I would have been paying more attention. A good reminder to think about what’s under the water.
