On Saturday, got nicely stuck in melt snow:

    IMG_09361.jpg

A JKU and two Tacos. The only remaining snow was on the northern exposures and was as heavy as snow gets. A few folks with more capable builds went up another turn or two and came back down reporting even worse conditions.

I was able to work my way up in a fresh set of tracks. The QS Taco used the magic of MTS / CC to get moving. That was really impressive given that either three (4Lo + locker) or four wheels at times were getting no traction. The JKU was behind us (I had the route mapped) and was on better tires. He got slightly into the ditch on the right when backing up to give me some running room.

I got to see Maxtrax and his winch in action. The Maxtrax are stellar gear.

We called it a (short) day and will hit it again in a month or so:

:rofl:Dont feel bad, I high centered hitting a snow covered rut in my S10- left it in 1st idling and got out to see how bad it was- the front left and right rear were spinning and it was stuck like a whale on a beach.

BTW- wouldn't exactly call the Stan a “Northern California” forest...you central valley boys are all mixed up! So says an old Turkey Tech Grad! Nice place though, I worked fisheries on that forest and was a river ranger and whitewater guide on the Stan before New Melones went in.

Have you driven down to the Clavey River? Gotta check that forest road out! Bring your fly rod, awesome rainbows in plunge pools down there.

Ok, my bad- seeing that the geographic center if the state is about 35 miles north of Fresno at North Fork, you are right.

So, have you driven the Clavey Bridge Road yet? Try it!

Hey I'm from North Fork. Lots of good roads where I grew up. Crappy thing is most of them are really messed up from last years hard rain. I grew up in a small neighborhood called Cascadel above North Fork. Dad worked for SCE for 35 years. I've been wanting to head up a little more north and check out some other areas. Anything north of Coulterville and Greely Hill would be new to me. I floated the Stan from Nights Ferry down to Oakdale pretty fun trip. Are there any other cool places to check out around there.

That’s pretty funny! I drove over Clavey River on Cottonwood road, but I’d love more info about what you are speaking of.

There’s a lot of roads up there, but forest roads, not rock crawling per se but I did hit a pretty awesome mud section that still coats my truck right now. This was my first trip up in SNF so I’m still figuring it out

You were there off Cottonwood - isnt that 1N01? Hike either way up or downstream from there and there are some really deep holes there- we used to park at the bridge and hike/swim downstream and Ive rafted the “T” and hiked up from the confluence. Such a nice place!

This one is while hiking to Skookum Falls, this is the White River that the trail follows along:

A rock that decided to test the strength of this bridge. It didn't pass it's test as you can see.

Overall a nice day being outside. Almost no one out too, having Mondays off is a good thing.

Check out Hwy 4 east of Bear Mountain when Ebbett’s Pass clears. You can raft between Markleeville and Garderville and camp at the hot springs on the East Fork of the Carson River, or 4-wheel to it when the water level goes down later in summer. The river is Class II+ to 3 if the water is high, but its cool if you have proper gear.

The trail to the hot spring for 4-wheelers crosses the river, but its important not to cross when the water is high- the river has a steep grade and it runs fast.

One of my favorite places, too. Nice shots!

My dog does that on walks also, can’t get ‘her’ to stop doing that either. :p
