Did some snow wheeling near Big Bear yesterday. Ran 2N02 (Burns Canyon) from Pioneertown up to about the 7,000 foot level and played in the snow for a few hours. Passed about 6 million vehicles on our way back down the mountain, which made me happy that we went early. It was a great day, and my first chance to do any snow wheeling in the new Taco.

Where was this at if you don't mind me asking? I have not explored Silver City much, and I'd sure like to check out that nice view.

    Thank you!

The tires are 285/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. The lift is about 2.25" in the front using Fox 2.5 coilovers (from a TRD Pro Tacoma) in conjunction with the Westcott TRD Pro kit (new lower spring perch and 1/4" top spacer). The rear is about about 1.75" higher than stock, thanks to a Headstrong progressive 3 leaf AAL and their additional 1/2" spacer shim.

Do you notice rubbing with the 285's. I have a eibach stage 1 with a icon AAL IN the back. I know "they" say to do the cab mount chop and some trimming. Didn't know if you were able to get away from that with a similar lift set up.

When I first installed the tires, I didn't have the lift yet. I had some pretty substantial rubbing, mostly the inside of the tire rubbing the upper control arm when turning. I added the Spidertrax 1.25" spacers, which eliminated the rubbing against the UCA, but now I had worse rubbing of the outside of the tires against the inside rear of the wheel wells as I turned (because I increased the "scrub radius" by adding the spacers). Then I had a cab mount chop done and had the pinch weld flattened, along with some of the plastic inner fender liner trimmed and reshaped. This eliminated about 95% of the rubbing, but I would still get a little rubbing when I would hit a dip or bump with the wheels turned. Finally, I installed the front suspension, and now I have no rubbing at all.

My opinion is that you will experience rubbing with 285s unless you do a cab mount chop and flatten the pinch weld. Even with the right wheels with the proper backspacing, you're going to experience it a little bit, especially if you're off-roading in your rig. If you do not take it off road, the rubbing will be minimal, as long as you have about 2" of lift and the perfect backspacing on your wheel setup (4.5" backspace is the perfect sweet spot for 3rd Gen Tacomas).

Here's a thread where I explored and learned a lot about backspacing and tire size, and I shared my learnings for others who may have the same questions: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/is-this-going-to-rub.694963/

You can also take a look at my build thread and see how the cab mount chop and suspension install progressed, and how it impacted the rubbing issues along the way: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/jfanaselles-3rd-gen-build-and-adventure-page.699778/

Good to know, thanks for the info. I would like to go up to 285's but at this point it be more for looks. My BF KO2's have never let me down and work well when I go off road, plenty of traction and a pretty descent footprint. There is so much more that I want to add so I'll keep them on the back burner for now.
