Memories, used to play out there with a couple buddies when I was a youngster in the navy. I had a Subaru Brat. Get drunk and hill climb. Good times.

 

Problem where I live, is the mountain passes where I fish from Spring to Fall, are not driveable in winter. Snow offroad will be 3 foot deep or more, and no road maintenance. Snow mobile only. Today I went to a lower elevation spot I visited last April. Last April the road was 10 inches compact snow and beautiful driving. Glorious weather. Not this time. Here we are only March 2, but a milder winter than is normal down lower, and it was just REALLY bad mud. Active logging road and they are churning it up. Zero fun. Did get out and walk a couple miles, but it was blowing 40mph, so a really bad wind chill. A lot of moose, cougar, deer, and rabbit tracks which is normal at this spot.

Took me over one hour of pressure wash just to do the undercarriage. Then onto the highway, and the truck is hammering so freaking bad it was not driveable. So I pulled off the highway and got under and spent another 30 minutes chiseling mud from inside the wheels that was still up to 2 inches thick. Christ, I was laying under the truck at the car wash with my overalls and knee pads, and spent almost 10 minutes per wheel inside and out. Was still not enough. Have to leave the 4x4 trips until it dries up in the mountains here.

 

A hot water pressure washer makes a big difference.

Yeah, this was a commercial hot pressure wash. This was that mud that builds up so much that every 10 minutes you have to stop and scrape it off each tire. Zero traction otherwise and later it dries on like thick concrete. The loggers up there have to clean their rigs every trip down the mountain. On my way up, I passed 7 fully loaded that were very slowly coming down. They drive that crap slower than they do snow. Today I crawl under the truck again and use my pressure washer to finish the undercarriage.

 

I purchased one of these. So far, I have done lighter cleaning, not the heavy off-road mud removal. For the winter grime, it worked well. I still needed to get up in the bed fenders, but this did most of the work.

This is also a good item. It's what I use for getting up in the fenders on the bed, the nooks and crannies around the bumpers, etc.

Yeah that looks good. Problem at my home though is my drain emptys into the drainage that goes around house perimiter footing. Those angle fittings would work well though for the next day mop up job, but only after first cleaning it at the commercial pressure wash. I went under the truck yesterday with my pressure washer to finish what I missed at the commercial station. The mud is so thick that my 2100psi washer will barely wash it off the driveway. Having to push it along with a shovel into a 6 inch deep pile about 2 feet around. That was after an hour at the commercial station. Had to shovel it into the bushes for top soil. No way I was washing that into my drainage to plug the drainage pipe around the house. Stuff is like fresh poured concrete. There’s mud, and then there’s mud. Staying away from those high elevation spots until it dries up a bit, just not worth the effort.

They make these in various sizes. I had a rectangular one at a former house that I could pop the top off of and clean out with a trenching shovel or small garden shovel.

This is a random side-by-side trail we found. Right before this video started, we all went down this hill and came into a steep section we would all lose our pans on. We were able to turn around in an acrobatic way and come back up this hill. It was very steep and loose with a couple large ledges to get over. My Low Engine Oil warning came on while going up and down which I hear is common on 3rd gen. Enjoy!

Awesome pictures!! Super jelly of the west coast guys. The wife and I took 2 weeks off and drove to the Grand Canyon, made a loop back thru Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Kansas. The views are absolutely amazing!!
