Pismo is an awesome place. As a teenager I had some really good times there.
I heard rumors they are talking about closing it to vehicles

I read the same rumors, definitely a bummer for the community. I'm glad we got the trip in, it will probably be the only time I visit with my truck—Central CA is a haul from Boulder, CO. The park was limiting camping to 100 reservations per day, so it felt quite private actually. I believe they are trying to increase that number over time. Asides from still finding sand literally everywhere, it was a great time.

Fun to use my traction boards a bunch as well.

Pretty easy actually. We went all the way back to and slightly past Horse Thief Basin. Beautiful scenery.
Nothing technical unless you do some offshoot fun. My GF's Highlander AWD would have made it out there comfortably.
I didn't even engage 4Hi till going through Crown King itself and even then wasn't needed until climbing a couple steep offshoots.

Doing my first offroading in the Tacoma, and my first offroading at all, in a long time this weekend. The "stock" run for Yankee Toys Fall Gathering in NH. It's usually a mix of dirt back roads and a variety of lighter trails and Class IV roads.

I've done it in years past in everything from a stock '85 4runner on 31's to a lifted FZJ80 on 35's but I'm a little nervous taking my basically brand new '21 Tacoma Offroad out there. I'll be with good folks in bigger machines and have plenty of straps and such, it's gonna be fun. I'm a little worried about these stock tires but have to imagine all the electronic traction aids, as well as the rear locker, will help me tame the terrain just fine.

Any tips for a not-new-to-offroading person, but new to this particular truck? I've read the manual and have a good understanding of the 4x4 system I think. Are the MTS modes really that different from each other? Seems that mostly they each allow a bit more tire spin/slip than the one before it.

It sounds silly but messing around in a crowded parking lot to realize your vehicle footprint and blind spots can help a lot.

If you can, get behind a vehicle as close to yours as possible and follow their line.

Thanks, for sure getting a handle on the vehicle corners will be a challenge at first, especially as I'm not looking to drive by feel :D :D

Just IMHO to add to this; follow trucks of alike. I learned quickly an 80 series line is vast different than a mini truck or 4r line..... and sort of visa versa.
