Because it sucks. I've seen what kind of damage to the undercarriage it can do once moisture is allowed to get under it. Better off with fluid film every year, or better yet cosmoline or crc.

    What about POR 15?
Any reason not to get as much as you can with it?
I just bought a 2013 with 96k and plan to keep it for 7 or more years (this will be my third time around).
It’s a New England truck so there is some rust, so I wire wheeled it and have the POR15 on hand but I don’t want to jeopardize any warranty. It’s had the inspection/treatment.

Yeah, up here in New England, if you plan to keep your truck a long time, you should try to do something from new.

Mine's just a lease, but I still plan to grab a couple of cans of Fluid Film and hit every nut and bolt on the chassis, every point that you might want to change/turn/adjust. It will make a difference down the road for alignments or if you ever need to work on your shocks, brakes, whatever.

You can do the whole frame or underside if you want, obviously, but even in my case with a 3 year ownership, I'll get the nuts and bolts at a minimum. It might save someone some hassle down the road.

OP, seems you've disappeared since your original post.
I would guess one should ask this question before offering advice. What part of the country do you live?

Personally i tried years ago on a trailer that was towed north every other weekend to vermont, and 2-3 times a winter to quebec. By the 3rd year you hardly noticed it was done with por 15. Quite a bit of prep went into this trailer before using it to. I wasn't that impressed. I now ordered cosmoline rp-342 for my 5x10 utility trailer that i've prepped ready for it. I did my new 2020 tacoma last summer with this stuff, and was very impressed this spring seeing its still looking like new new. I use to do fluid film every year, by spring it mostly washed away. As long as you kept doing it every year, its fine, but for me that got old. I'm to the point where its done once, and i don't need to go over it every fall.

The problem with POR 15 (or other similar coating) is that it's impossible to do the proper prep and to completely coat all areas on an assembled vehicle.

So the coating will fail where the prep wasn't perfect and rust will form on the uncoated areas and creep under the coated spots.

I've done it in the past and it will last for a while and will provide protection while it lasts but it will eventually fail.

After years of battling rust, I'm convinced that a soft (oil/wax) coating spray applied every year is the only way to go.

Exactly right. POR15 is great if you coat all of a frame with it. Sections won't help much.

My understanding is that the 3rd gen frame is higher alloy and higher strength steel than previous gens and is not only stronger but more corrosion resistant than previously. I am sure I read that a few months ago. I will have to look for it again.

I called my dealer and asked about undercoating and about how much of a problem rust had been on the 3rd gens. He said undercoating is never a bad idea, but did say that so far the 3rd gens had been fairing much better

If they were fairing much better, they wouldn't already have a service campaign to inspect the frames and apply additional treatment.

What year did "they" start applying wax to the inside of the frame?
And I guess by they you mean Toyota?
