Does anyone know where I can buy 134a can of refrigerant with no additives? What I mean is no dye no oil and no stop leak. Any suggested brands? My air is just blowing cool not cold and I would like to add some refrigerant. I cleaned out the evaporator box and my condenser is clean and my compressor appears to be running okay.

Most auto parts stores should have cans (Maybe not in stock, depends on your local store). Harbor Freight also sells cans.

I will add that overcharging your system will not improve performance - more refrigerant =/= more cooling once you reach a full charge.

Do you have an Ollies around you? They had it for around $7 a can a few weeks ago. Not a bad price if I didn't have 3 cases of it.

The cheap super tech cans at Walmart don’t have stop leak in them, I believe. Check before you buy

Have you confirmed it’s low on refrigerant and not another issue causing the problem. If you over charge by just adding refrigerant you can damage components.

Thanks guys for all the input. I have researched this AC issue quite a bit and have checked everything that I can without equipment or gauges. I've owned this truck for 18 years and in the past 4 years it has slowly got warmer air coming out. It is cool but just not cold enough for 95° weather and I would like to add refrigerant to the system to see if it will blow colder. My cooling system seems to work flawlessly. I will be calling some local shops and see what their minimum charge to hook up and see if I just need refrigerant. If it appears that they just want to rip me off then I'll do it myself.

Walmart around my area sells regular cans of refrigerant. I've actually had good luck on slow leaks tossing half a mini can of stop leak in first.

Oh, I forgot to ask if it would be okay that the can has oil in it. The sticker under the hood says to use only ND oil #8, SAE J-639. Do the cans state which kind of oil additive is included?

Most of the cans say what kinds of oil they're compatible with on the back

I had read somewhere during my research, that if I needed a shop with a qualified AC Tech to do the work for me later on, that he can detect if I used stop leak and would have to evacuate the whole system and add new refrigerant, along with adding a new part to the system. That would surely add to the cost of the repair in my opinion.

All AC work will require an evacuation, they evaluate by how well the system holds vacuum usually. New 134 is cheap, and anytime a system is opened or just old it is a good idea to replace the reciever/drier. But that's like a $20 part.

Thank you Speedytech7 for such an informative reply. Any ideas what that might cost me if the tech finds that there is no other repairs needed?

If it doesn't need seals or any parts... sub $150 I'd think since labor would hardly be a factor. Machine does the vacuum test and recharge itself.

I can't thank you guys enough for such instant replies and for the help that I need. I do not claim to be any kind of professional but I do like to do all the work I possibly can for myself. At 71 years Young I have limited resources $ and generally cannot afford the prices the shops charge nowadays.

AC work that doesn’t involve replacing parts is generally fairly inexpensive from independent shops
They roll the machine out and hook it up, and do what’s needed

I'd probably just use a regular can of refrigerant to top it up and see how it does, if it is still working a little then the leak isn't too bad.
