I'd go on car-part.com and find a used one out of wrecked truck from a local dismantling yard...at least you know it ran when the truck got wrecked, and they usually come with a 30-90 day warranty.

What happened to the engine you currently have? Is it for your 2015 Tacoma?

I'd also recommend car-part.com. Unfortunately a used 4.0 engine is $3,000-$5,000. I'd still recommend a used motor over a rebuilt motor. Most rebuilt motors are done with cheap Chinese rebuild kits.

That info will help others reading. That's a lot of mileage for a 2015!

If you do decide to go rebuilt, just make sure it comes with a long warranty like 1 year. I always recommend low mileage used engines (100k miles approx.) Because the Toyota factory puts these engines together better than anyone. Good luck to you.

I think it is. With used engines, either something will be wrong with it or it'll be fine. I'd pull a valve cover and check for sludge...if no sludge, put it back on and put it in the truck. Then it'll either work or it won't.

I rebuilt one of these about 8 years ago (bought a 4runner that someone had changed headgaskets on and failed to torque the timing chain tensioners on the heads...which fell off, jammed up and broke one of the chains. Had to tear it all down to clean out all the aluminum). I didn't do any machine work, because there wasn't any to be done. I checked the valve job that we done with the headgaskets before I bought it and that looked good.

Depending on the failure, not all of these can be rebuilt. The sleeves are very thin and it anything like many modern engines, have some sort of special surface treatment on the cylinders. I don't think they can be bored and I'm not sure if oversized pistons are even available.

Headgasket kit is about $350 from toyota. Valve job will be about $1000...maybe more. If the thing runs OK aside from that, I'd just fix it. Mine had 190K on it when I went through it...I put pistons/rings in it because I had it apart, bearings because they were packed with aluminum shrapnel from grinding up the chain tensioners...obviously new timing chain set (be careful of aftermarket main chain tensioners...they like to consolidate the 4.0L and 3.5L tensioners...and they're different. Bolts end up too short with the aftermarket tensioner...get it at the dealer). The cylinders, crank, rods, etc all measured up within spec. I did not hone the cylinders because the finish was acceptable and all honing would do is probably make it worse. If not for the botched headgasket job, the engine was in about like new condition otherwise at 190K miles. 240K isn't a lot of miles for a modern toyota engine...a whole lot of 'em out there with well north of 300 on 'em still running like new.

Hi . my radiator bust 3 years ago and I just loosing coolant slowly , now 2 cylinder have missfire for more than 2 weeks and piston is start making noice
Sounds like purchasing used engine is like lottery, risky one . Even if they give me 6 months warranty.
I was reading reviews from one California company , 3 people complain so bad ,they got screw and the guy (owner)stop communicating with them , one lady she has to file lawsuit to-get money back
    Thanks lot for advising me
