I’m thinking of doing a rebuild on my starter but can’t seem to locate the replacement brushes online. Does anyone know where to find them for my 99 v6? I located them for the 4 cylinder but the v6 seems pretty elusive for some reason.

Also. Would you all recommend a starter rebuild? Will it last long? Or would most of you just recommend replacing the starter completely?

I use a local electrical shop to rebuild alternators and starters. You might see if there is one in your area.

@Jimmyh might have a lead on a rebuild kit.

Is there a problem you are trying to fix, or is this PM?

Most Napa or other "non McDonald" parts stores have the brushes. Many towns have electric motor repair shops of some sort that can help out.

Starters in general are extremely simple. Over the years I can't tell you how many starters I've simply "revived" to like new operation by just a quick dissasembly, brake cleaning and light lube. Very often the brushes and armature are just fine. It is good to just Emory cloth "fine sand" the armature where the points ride.

Why do you want to rebuild your starter? Do you have a problem with it and if so, what kind of problem?

I would suspect that the plunger and the contacts that connect the battery to the solenoid are worn out. It's kind of a common problem. You can (or you could, a few years ago) buy the plunger and contacts on line and from your dealer along with the starter brushes and then replace the old parts. The starter motor itself should be in good shape.

BTW there's an excellent video by Timmy the Toolman that show how he removed the starter on his V6 and what he did to replace the parts. Hope this helps!

Rebuilding seats with leather from furniture and extra padding. Might put leather on the dash and other interior parts.
Those copper solenoid contact things are what went wrong with mine. The replacements I got weren't quite right. I had to bend one of them over the opposite way. Was not a big deal, just put it in a vise, heated it up a little and pushed it over. If you are taking it apart, might as well replace that stuff too.
