A little bit of this, a little bit of that...
Define "Overlanding", because a lot of people are recommending places to just go wheelin'. Wanna overland, go west, I mean far west.

You consider putting them in boy/girl scouts it's fun and it will teach them some good life lessons

Also interested in this. I do not need true "Overlanding" but maybe a state/national forest that allows drive-in primitive camping other than big bend?

    I drive a Miata.

There is plenty of primitive camping in texas, but you gotta pay for it. After using the hipcamp site I have no desire to go back to the state park style of camping.

As far as free public lands to camp, I think I can list three spots in the state off the top of my head. I definitely wish we had more.

Hipcamp is the Airbnb of camping. Some hosts offer primitive, others full hook, and still others will rent out their cabins, yurts, and hippie vans. There are some true gems on there, and also some real sketch holes.

    So... exactly like Airbnb. :D

I know when I was a kid my dad worked for this rancher off the guadalupe river and we would camp off the river in a private area away from the public it was in kendall county

Not sure if you have yet, but Texas is lucky to have a decent amount of beaches you can drive/camp on. Something to try a few times if you are into beaches/fishing.

Beaches are great fun, I used to do that frequently. When I did I carried a completely different set of gear for beach camping, nothing that was new or nice was allowed to be packed in the beach box. It doesn't matter how meticulous you are, the sand will thrash everything.

No matter how much and how often you clean your vehicle, you're never getting rid of the sand.

SPI is a staple campsite for me. I go around 10-20 times in 1 year since its about 45mins away from where I live. I have been wanting to try PINS. I also have started going to Falcon State Park.

The further south you can get the better. South of Matagorda/Port Aransas, and getting into the Padre Islands is where you want to be. On the other side of Houston, Bolivar penninsula has some good spots for BFE camping, if you can tolerate murky brown water.

Its 7 hour drive for you. I would definitely head out there atleast once. Best part is its free to drive in if you go through access 6 which is basically 4x4 only anyways.
