Because I'm not destroying a customers wheel locks if the dum dum has the key at home. If the key is gone without a trace then the big guns come out

So why is it a pain in the ass for the tech if its easy? Customer needs new lugnuts, thats his pain and a selling opportunity for the shop.

Because it's more work I have to do for free. In all my years I've only gotten paid twice for removing locks.

But its just seconds.. im using your words here and just trying to understand. Anyway.. of all the people ive known who lost their key, they were charged 40-120 (BMW) per wheel to have em removed. Def shouldnt be free.

OP, i keep mine in a small bag with wrenches, sockets and multi hex driver under the driver side front seat.

If it's seconds or hours. Time ads up. I get paid by the job. And 120 per wheel?!?!??!? That's bank right there.

I use gorilla lugs too, and always hand the socket to the tire guy or at the very least leave it on the console and let him know it's there. I intend to make it as much of a pain in the ass as possible to steal anything off of my trucks, including the truck. Can it be stolen? Sure. But I'm not going to just make it easy. If locking lugs are a waste of time, then alarms are a waste of time and money .. hell why even lock you doors, just let 'em have you shit. lol I'm sure the thieving bastards will thanking you as they make off with your hard earned goods. I intend to have them cussing me every inch of the way. But that's just me I reckon.

I always leave the key in the cup holder on both vehicles when we take them into service. One time on my wife's 4Runner that just uses the gorilla spline drive locks, I left the key in the cup holder, told the service writer where it was. When the truck was done, the tech that brought the truck out tells me they didn't rotate the tires or check the brakes cause I didn't leave them the key. I told him it was in the cup holder, and I told the service girl that. And he goes, no, that's just the spline drive tool. It doesn't work on the locks. So I reach in and grab it and show it to him and ask him "you mean this thing that says "Gorilla lock key" on it?!?" Fucking morons...

Thanks everyone for the responses! I'm a full time student and part time worker paying off my taco. Finally about to install my k02's on my scs sr8 so trying to prevent my wheels being stolen! Would suck if it did happen and I have to go through the process of nagging my gf again for letting me buy the setup.

Those locking wheel lugs nuts won't keep someone from getting the wheels off. Theyll just hammer a socket on to get the nut off. That's what a garage does when you loose a key and they have to remove it.

While it's true a pro can steal any wheels he/she wants, most thieves are not pros. Most are opportunists looking for something easy and quick to steal. Throw them locks on and as folks here have suggested, keep the locks handy for mechanics. I will hand them the key and they put it inside the bag with the work order.
