Is sketchup any good? I want to learn to use a program that a shop can actually work with when I want something made.

Recommendations on software (I’m on Mac, but could dust off a windows 10 machine), and where to start with getting the hang of it appreciated.

It's a start. Once you mess around with one and get familiar other more advanced programs will be easier to use.
