That post is much clearer. The first post had nothing to do with terminology.

What was 'bad' on the original 7 pin?

I went through a few 2nd Gen owners manuals, there is no "towing conveter" in any of them? So, not sure what kind of help you expect when nobody even knows what the hell you are referring too?
Given that, most likely a bad ground, or maybe a loose wire from adding new plug.

I've wired a number of trailer plugs. The main reason for them going "bad" isn't usually the plug itself. It's usually a corroded ground where it's attached to the frame. When I start having problems, the first thing I do is follow the ground wire to the frame. I usually need to drill a new hole and put in a new screw for clean contact with the frame. It's saved me from having to do a rewire job numerous times, but I had to learn the hard way.

I have heard of trucks with the European separate amber turn signal having issues when connected, which do require some kind of convertor to function properly.

Me I use one that plugs in to 7 pin plug and worKS great.... so idk.

WTF? That makes about as much sense as the OP.

As for location some one might have installed it, look behind each taillight. Or close behind bumper.

Well it's fixed, thank you for the diagram IronPeak4x4. My wiring was wrong on the new 7 prong and had some blown bulbs on the trailer. I'll try and do better about explaining next time. Appreciate you guys that were understanding and tried to help me.

Just get a 7 to 4 adapter that has indicator lights built in. I have one and it is essential because the plug on Tacoma is very particular about how the trailer plug is pushed in. Never had the problem with my 2009 either with the factory one or the aftermarket. I usually have to work the plug to get all lights to work.

It is correct. You are going from turn signals and brake lights that separate to ones on trailer that are combined. Had a Chevy Luv like that. It required a converter for trailer lights.

Auto parts stores and places that sell shells often have a tester that they can insert to determine if the wiring was connected properly.

Guys I'm having the same problem and have wired trailers for over 40 years. Apparently there is an integrated converter module as part of the instrumentation cluster. Why, No Idea, it certainly didn't and shouldn't have been engineered this way. Engineers over complicate. All the pins on harness at bumper check out OK with a meter, ground wire at hitch is great and connected to freshly ground metal. Ground wire at the trailer end where lights connect are the same new and to fresh metal. I always check the grounds first, but this is strange. If I hook up just the yellow wire to the left light yellow wire the turn signal works. As soon as I hook up the brown wire the turn signal doesn't work. running light works but no turn or stop light. These are new hopkins LED. I initially installed a new set of Harbor Freight LED last year when I rebuilt built and rewired my utility trailer. I figured when the lights didn't work it the Harbor Freight set being crap. I have every place the wires run through the trailer frame rubber grommeted. fresh ground connections all new wires. Harbors set as many are made in China at the flat 4 pin connection I could see wire through the insulation. That's when I looked for a U.S.A. made set which led me to the Hopkins set at Autozone. Same condition though, it doesn't work. Hopkins instructions talk about the electronic turn signal converter, but when I enter my vehicle in to order one it comes back with not available for my truck. Why? because the Gen3 taco has it's own somewhere in the instrument cluster. I want to be able to change it and not take it to a dealer. I want to know why it blew and how to replace it. I believe this is what she was talking about.
