If I have a 1st gen Ext cab 4x4 6cyl, would any 1st gen extended frame (2wd, 4cyl, etc.) fit my truck? Or do I need to find the exact same trim level to be compatible.

Also, can someone explain the difference between a pre-runner and a Tacoma? Can I use pre-runner parts on my truck?

    thanks,
    Newbie

If you have a 5 lug truck you need a 5 lug frame, if you have a six lug truck you need a 6 lug frame.

Similarly if you have an auto you need an auto, a manual needs a manual.

    And a 4wd needs a 4wd.

As you decerned it has to have the same cab as well.

But so long as those are the same anything trim level won't matter, trim is largely just feature packages but not mechanical differences.

A "Pre-Runner" is just a 2WD TRD Off-Road, some came with the optioned rear locker.

Most parts manufacturers use Pre-Runner as a base 6 luck truck to differentiate from a base Tacoma which is 5 lug.

Pre-Runner parts will for the most part work on your truck so long as you have a 6 lug.

There's some exceptions to this information (for instance the very rare factory 5 lug V6's) but it should be fairly accurate for most situations, it is of course always best to double check for your specific instance.

You definitely need to keep it in the 5-lug/6-lug family, but as far as needing a 4x4 frame (if you're a 4x4) I'm not so sure about that. 1st gen pre-runner to 4x4 conversions are all bolt on, so the frames are identical.

If you want to make it "easy", yes, find an identical frame from an identical model, v6, auto, etc... That said, just about any 6-lug xtracab frame will work.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It really comes down to how you define fit

They would all fit some just need much more work to make it happen.

Don`t forget to factor in shipping costs from the dry rust free part of the country

It needs to be an excab frame, prerunner or 4x4 no 5 lug. Auto or manual doesn’t matter. 98-04 preferably, 95.5 will work but Leaf springs are shorter. Engine mounts are 1 inch farther forward on a 3.4 vs 4cyl but are the same and easy enough to move.
