I have been searching for quite a while for a DCSB in my price range. I really want a 2009+ but am not wanting to spend over $24k. I have two locally. Both are 1 owner vehicles that appear to well maintained. One is for sale by owner and the other is at a dealership. They appear to be in pretty comparable condition.

Here's the catch. One is $20k and has 170,000 miles on it and the other is $24k with just under 100,000 miles. I was hoping to save some money to by a canopy and a few other things. What would you do?

    Thanks for the help.!

170K is too high for me, that's where you start having to put money into it, I traded my 2006 when it hit 175K. Mine traded for $12K, $20K sounds too high to me with those miles. I paid $24K for my 2006 with 4000 miles on it as a dealer demo. I realize that geographics play into prices, but that sounds high to me, another $6K or so you can get a new one with a factory warranty and probably a 2% loan for 5 years.

those prices are high. you can find a 2011 with 50k miles for around $20k easily.

Too much for used, than again that's why I bought a new one. 30k for trd offroad DCSB with no miles. You'll need to shop around hard and long or find someone desperate to escape the payments of theirs. I think the 100k mile one for $20k-$21k would be about right

Yea WAY too high priced! If your already set on one of these to, I would go for the private seller depending on the condition. But if its the high mileage one then no go. The deals are out there. My first tacoma (went back to the dealer after they tried to hide frame rust) was a 2001 SR5, 1 owner with 44xxx miles on it. I flew to NJ from Ohio to pick it up. The Taco i got right after that, and still have, was a 2006 SR5 xcab with 60xxx miles and picked it up for around $18k after tax, title ect....so the deals are out there!

Thanks for all the advice. I keep reading about all these great deals but cannot seem to find one in my area. Ive been searching for about a month now and if I could find deals like you guys are talking about I would jump on it in a second. I do need 4wd and I was really thinking about the TRD OR package. It is unlikely I will do a whole lot of modding on my own so the TRD package has what I am looking for. Not sure if this affects your thoughts on the above or not. I was thinking about going to the dealer with the 100k truck and just throwing them an offer of $20 or $21 and see what they say.

Also, I have been searching autotrader and craigslist (and this forum of course). Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

The dollar amounts and mileage is way too high for a 2009. Keep looking.

No Joke... I had a dealer try and get me into a 4x4 V6 Auto, Base with Navi. I could of had that truck and traded in the 4Runner (upside down in trade value) and Maryland Taxes & Fees for $26k (or $450 @ 60m). But I walked away from it; it did not have Cruise Control!

In Maryland there are several dozen 4x4 Tacoma under 75k miles and under $24k; I'd keep looking.

No way I would pay 20k for anything with over 100,000 miles...no
    Matter what it is.

Look for trucks in surrounding states. I had to drive at least 4 hrs to get my truck. But I was willing to drive up to 10 hrs if needed for a good deal.

I am looking also in the Las Vegas, NV area. Tacoma Access Cab, V6, 4WD....They are hard to find. There are a couple in local dealerships and if you can tolerate a short bed you have more options. Local Dealers ask a lot for these Tacos...more than they are worth IMO. Private party sales in NV have no sales tax for 2006 and newer models; putting the dealers at a disadvantage.

"Here's the catch. One is $20k and has 170,000 miles on it and the other is $24k with just under 100,000 miles. I was hoping to save some money to by a canopy and a few other things. What would you do?"

For what you quoted the miles and asking prices are too high. Remember at 90 K is a timing belt service and that cost me aprox $1800 if done complete with water pump, bearings, belts and seals. If manual then maybe a clutch replacement on anything over 100K...plus Alternator, Starter motor, battery...of course brakes and shocks.

I got my 09 at 36,000 miles at 24k from the dealer.

I would think you need to do little more expediting , with time you will find something you more comfortable on purchasing. Good luck!

The dealer may be willing to negotiate. Is it the higher priced 100k miles one?

Often, dealers will price trucks sky high in order to be able to cover the cost of the suboptimal financing they have to offer to buyers with poor credit.

Go on KBB.com and price out the dealer truck, miles, options, etc...

If, as we suspect, the dealer's asking considerably more than kbb retail - go in there with a printout of the info and a reasonable offer.

If you arm yourself with KBB numbers, at least you have ammo to negotiate. Its coming up on the end of the month, that too should give you some leverage, just set your demands and don't be afraid to walk away.

I'm not a fan of car salesmen, and I say that with many of them in my family. It's all about the game, you just need to find a hungry one and stand your ground.
